GPS "magnetic streets"

Could it be that Garmin is "cheating" a little with the positioning, or have I possibly made the wrong setting?

One of the reasons why I chose the Fenix 7 is the much-praised accuracy of the GPS. And indeed, my first run in the city park delivered results that I could only dream of with my old tracker, despite the green trees.

Today I ran through the town: The recorded path runs perfectly along the streets and paths. About halfway through the route, I made a small detour to a former sports field. The result is shown below.

After that I went to play basketball. Again, I was repeatedly located on the road (and an arbitrary second point) several meters away. So it can't be due to a possible "magnetic roads" setting, which might make sense for running. Especially since I did not find such an option.

The setting was "Satellites - All + Multiband (Increased accuracy)", but the data recording frequency was not set to "Every second" but to "Intelligent". As I understand it, this should have no influence on the location of the data point.

Looking forward to your input.

    You have an incorrect setting:

MENU > Map > Lock on Road [Toggle OFF]

And, despite a wealth of contrary opinions, I always find "Every Second" data recording to provide a better track - so, I'd switch to that.

  • Garmin ... WTF?!

    Thanks for your help.

  • I had the same problem yesterday. My activity uses the global settings for the map and in this global setting the "Lock on Road" was disabled. However, I had this strange magnetic road phenomenon. Can anyone reproduce this. I am on  version 15.77.

  • It is certainly a different phenomenon for you, but if you live in Europe, it is interesting to know that Russia is currently "GPS jamming". If you google you can find reports on this.

  • Yes, I know, but after changing the map from vector to raster during the activity the track recording was as expected and the magnetic phenomenon disappeared. As soon as you activate a vector map, the strange behaviour returns. This can't be related to the "GPS jamming". It must be a software problem.
