It's been very hit and miss with Basecamp on the Mac over the years as the newer devices have been launched, particularly those that use MTP. I have been told that Basecamp has been deprecated and to use Garmin Explore - now that really is a bad user experience. Anyway, in the light of the recent discussions about Basecamp I fired it up on my Mac and surprise, surprise it's working:
