Fenix 7X Saphire Solar 16.22 Update Repeating

So, I did the 16.22 update three weeks or so ago manually through the watch interface when it first came out.  A few days later, I got a notification that there was an update.  So, I went ahead and clicked install.  After the second update, I was still  showing version 16.22 on the watch.  Since then, I have had the same, "update available" and installed them a few more times.

Each time, it says successful, and each time the version has not changed. (with the exception of the first time when I actually needed the update)

Am I the only one this is happening to?  Any ideas how to get it to stop doing this aside from turning off automatic updates?

  • Hello @TWE

I am sorry to hear you are being prompted to reinstall the same software repeatedly. It is possible there may have been in a corruption in the update file, or the update is stuck in the que. For this, there are a few steps you can try to resolve this.

    To clear the sync que:

    1. Sign into the Connect account at a computer
    2. Click on the device drop down (upper right)
    3. If there is a number next to the device, click on this
    4. Click on the X next to the listed items to remove them from the sync que

If this continues, you can try removing the device from Garmin Express on the computer, and hard reset the watch.

To Remove the watch from Express:

    1. Launch Garmin Express
    2. Click on the device
    3. Click on Tools an Content
    4. Click on the Utilities tab
    5. Select Remove device

To hard reset the watch, hold the Light button until the watch shuts off, as opposed to selecting power off. Then power this on again.

If you are still prompted to install, a corrupted update file may be in the watch menu. Please only try these steps on your own, if you feel comfortable with this:

    1. Connect the watch with a Windows computer
    2. Open the watch drive
    3. Open the Garmin folder
    4. Locate the DeviceUpdate.gcd file
    5. Delete this
    6. Disconnect and powercycle the watch
    7. Try updating the watch again using Garmin Express.
  • Signing in to Garmin Connect, there are no numbers next to my Fenix.

I am not doing a factory reset until and unless it is a very last resort.  However, I did notice that there were map updates waiting in Garmin Express.  I am a bit surprised that these do not update automatically.

There is no DeviceUpdate.gcd file anywhere on my watch.  So, not able to delete.  There were also no files with "update" in the name.  There was a folder that is called "UpdateManager" with a "database" subfolder that is completely empty.

The repeated updates appear to recur about once a week.  So, it will take some time to see if it stops trying to update after this one.

One wasn't suggested. A hard reset is not the same thing . Provided you sync the watch before you reset, you won't lose any data or settings.

There have been a couple of small updates recently that have given some people the impression that the 16.22 software is being reinstalled. One was a Timezone update a couple of weeks back. The other is a NFCC update. In both cases, there is no information about the update unless the updates have been applied through Garmin Express.

This would have been good information prior to digging in to all of the settings.  The pop up on the watch does indeed give the impression that 16.22 is being reinstalled.  Might not hurt for them to make a comment in the forums, or maybe even state the purpose of the update on the watch notification itself.

  • One was a Timezone update a couple of weeks back.

After installing the time zone map, this was displayed for approx. 1 - 2 seconds. It might be an idea to also display the respective version in the clock information.

If that were true on my watch, I would not have been in here asking.  Instead, it stated "Updated to version 16.22" for about 2 seconds and then disappeared.

When it prompted for the update, all it said was that there was a new version available, It did not say anything about time zone or NFC and asked to install now, or install later.  I chose later and then it self installed about an hour later with no prompts.  I was on a longer road trip at the time, so I could not check the forums.

When I read about the time zone updates, I asked my wife if she had gotten similar updates. Even though she also has auto updates on, she had not received .  So, I told her to check. Low and behold, when she did a manual check, it popped up as available. Doing it manually, it did say it was for time zone.  However, when it was done, hers gave the same "Updated to version  16.22" when done.

So, when the update ran automatically for me, it said nothing about time zones.  If it had, I would not have thought it was a version update.  But, when she checked manually, it did say that it was for time zones.
