Fenix7/Spotify/Garmin Connect - won't sync/play downloaded podcasts

Hey all,

Related to a previous post (unfortunately locked now!)

Normal spotify music playlists all sync ok - can add them, remove them, edit/update them - all good - happy days

Spotify podcasts, just can't get them onto the watch - so have to take the phone and use that - which works, but kinda defeats a huge benefit of the Fenix 7

Method 1

Fenix 7 -> music -> library -> add music and podcasts -> Podcasts -> no podcasts, find podcasts you've followed here

Well, that's the problem, no they don't, tried following more podcasts and unfollowing all except one test podcast - no difference (powering off/on the phone and watch each time to reset)

Method 2

add downloaded podcasts to a playlist

Fenix 7 -> music -> library ->  playlists -> (the playlist with the podcast in is listed, with the green 'add' option) -> add -> searching for wi-fi -> syncing spotify -> stays at 0% then says either complete or can say fails

back to the list the playlist is still there with the green add option - regardless of it if thinks it worked or did not work

multiple podcasts in one playlist, or, single podcast in a play list - no difference. Name of playlist being that of the episode, or something random - no difference. Episode/s from a different podcast - no difference.

deleted other music playlists just to ensure there's no space issues - my test one is 30 min podcast, and I over 80% space, so should not be space - to test, sync'd a mahoosive music playlist which took up around 40%, just to validate, which worked fine (then removed it)

Tried changing as much of the order of doing things as I can think of - so like, having it plugged into the laptop, unplugged, Garmin connect connected before starting, after starting, powering off/on the phone first, then the watch, or powering off/on the watch first then phone - nothing seems to make a difference

So, question...

Has anyone successfully got a podcast down onto a Fenix 7 via Spotify? - is this actually possible, been at this for some hours now, and starting to think that it was just wishful thinking by some bloody marketing team somewhere! So be good to know if it is really possible and i'm not completely wasting my time.

Seems like my next step will be third party products - or - converting media types, which guessing will probably work, but that's even more faff for something that on the face of it should be simple.

Thankful for any ideas any one can offer that might help save my sanity!

Cheers,

Ash

  • Just for anyone else running into this...

playlist with a single music file - syncs ok

add a podcast to that playlist and update - it completes ok, but the playlist still only has the one music file

changing the audio quality of the podcast doesn't help (Spotify suggests it uses different file formats for different file quality)

    • Ogg/Vorbis (96, 160, 320 kbps)
    • AAC (128, 256 kbps)
    • HE-AACv2 (24kbps)

Logically then, this suggests that where Spotify is concerned at least, Fenix does not actually support podcasts, so the fix is to locate the downloaded podcast file, and converting the file format into something the watch can work with, which probably means a little messing about / trail and error, and re-uploading under the new format.

An ugly solution, but would probably work - or just use the Fenix for music, and fall back on the phone for podcasts

  • Ive found that I need to sync the watch with Garmin Connect after following a podcast before it'll show up in the watches Spotify app for synching. Here's my process:

    1. Follow podcast on phone
    2. Open Garmin Connect and sync (you normally don't have to manually do this unless you're looking immediately downloading episodes for a podcast you've just followed)
    3. Open Spotify on the watch
    4. Add music and podcasts. Enjoy!

Ive been following and listening to 20+ podcasts on the watch for many months. No issues beyond followed podcasts not immediately showing up prior to synching.

  • Try opening IQ connect on the phone and update spotify. Worked for me.

  • aesome -thanks, just did this and worked for me too
