16.22 Heartrate from WHR but HRM Strap connected

I did a small run with my HRM Pro, and it is connected to the watch. When I looked at the Heart Rate it was a bit strange as it didn't register the HR ramp-up of a sprint that well, which it would normally do.
Looking at the fit file afterward, the HRM strap is listed under device_info, but is not chosen as HR source.
I thought it was maybe the strap dying, but using another watch with older firmware, it took the HRM Pro as source in another test.

Anyone else seen this behavior?

  • create a Power Mode with the OHR disabled, and assign it to the concerned activity. Once done, it will turn the OHR off, each time you start the activit

It is even not needed, on Fenix already exist "Jacket" power mode which disables OHR sensor.
Only what need to be done to select this mode as default for activity you want to use without OHR enabled.
I'm using this trick more than two years, since I bought my Fenix 7, now it also forks on Descent MK3i.

  • It actually can.

It can but it most often is not. Let's not suddenly pretend that OHR is more precise than chest strap, when in every post related to inaccurate OHR it is always recommended to buy a chest strap.

Doing it hiddenly is an absolute no go.

    Exactly.

There should be a system wide setting for this. Personally I don't use Garmin pay and would rather never use the wrist HR when an external sensor is connected. I don't trust my watch making that decision automatically, especially when there isn't an easy way to tell afterwards which HR source was used. The more complex it is the more likely there will be some new bugs in the features that worked reliably before.

I wholeheartedly agree with this statement.

It should be easily configurable to select which device you want to record HR with.

If 2 devices are measuring at the same time, it should be visible/obvious at all times which device is making HR recording if 2 devices, and it should be visible in recorded activity in Garmin Connect which parts of HR are recorded by which device.

  • I have noticed this as well.

Before update and a good run after the update:

    Bad data found after update:

The recorded heart rate jumps after I stop the sprint. It makes it much harder for the watch to recognize anaerobic exercise.

The reason I got the HRM Pro originally was because of how poorly the optical heart rate works on me with my thin wrists. This update seems to be leaking inaccurate data from the optical heart rate sensor into the data from the chest sensor.

What we really need is an indicator for which sensor it's using, an explicit alert for unreliable data from the chest HRM, and an easier option to disable the optical HR sensor.

  • So you are saying that the last example is from an external sensor? That is horrible!
