GPS works in Activity but fails in Save Location

I am using my Tactix 7 Pro in a tropical forest.

When I select an Activity (Hike), "Wait for GPS" appears and after a minute or two the bar turns green showing GPS has acquired:

However, if I stand in exactly the same spot and try to directly Save Location (without any Activity selected), this screen appears and stays like this for a very long time (after which the watch gives up and returns to the regular clock face):

I have tried these two things in reverse order and I get the same problem. Save Location can't get GPS fix but Activity gets it fast.

The GPS setting for both Save Location and Activity is set to "All + Multiband". So why does it work for Activity but not for Save Location?

Of course, if I need to save a location, I could first launch an activity to get the GPS fix and then directly save the location while in the activity. But this is extra work and consumes unnecessary battery power. I don't want to select an activity at all. I just want to activate GPS and save a location without doing anything else.

  • Same issue here with the Fenix 7. Any updates on this problem?

The same problem occurs when I try to calibrate altitude using GPS or DHM.

@garmin, is this a known bug?

  • It is possible to record an activity with GPS when the watch has located on a single satellite. However the accuracy of your activity is likely to be very low. As long as you are recording the activity with a clear view of the sky, additional satellites will be found as you go.

Since a saved location is looking your very specific location, it would need more than a single satellite to be located for accuracy. So I would recommend the following:

    • If you wait longer, does this eventually allow the saved location? If so, this is likely when additional satellites were located.
    • If not, ensure you have a clear view of the sky. Stand away from buildings, foliage etc. to ensure this is able to locate satellites.
    • Sync the watch with Garmin Express, to ensure the CPE is not expired. This will allow the watch to locate satellites more quickly.
    • If this is not finding satellites for saved locations, it may be beneficial to try a hard reset. For this, hold the Light button until the watch shuts off, as opposed to selecting power off. Then power this on again.
