Question: Pre-planned tracks and up-ahead location input workflow

Hey there,

I would like to use the up-ahead feature for a track, that I received as a gpx file. So I need to put in the correct markers, that I want to have displayed in up-ahead.

My question is, if it is somehow possible to achieve this without using Garmin Connect.

I already have the locations as waypoints in Basecamp, so this would be my preferred option.

Does anyone know how to do it or can share a workflow?

Another thing, why I am hesitant with Garmin Connect is, that I would like to do the marker input with coordinates, rather than following the track and "guessing" the placement on the map.

I don't think that it can be done in Basecamp.

What is possible:

Plotaroute: web based, adds course point with correct symbols.
Locus Map: Android app, does not support Garmin symbols (only generic "flag" symbol is displayed)

Can Basecamp export a gpx track with waypoints included? Because then also IQMapReceiver (Android app) should work.

Up Ahead doesn't work with basic waypoints. It requires waypoints with correct on course distance.

The conversion from waypoints to course points with distance doesn't properly work even in Garmin Connect when you import a GPX file with waypoints. It seems that Garmin Connect changes the type from waypoint to course point, but doesn't add the distance, so these converted course points don't show up in Up Ahead.

There are only 3 possible ways to make Up Ahead work as far as I know:

1) Create new course points (from scratch) in Garmin Connect when editing a course

2) Add them in plotaroute.com, then export the course as FIT file and copy it directly on the watch

3) Add named waypoints on a course in Strava route editor and then sync the course from Strava to Garmin.

The third method is a relatively recent addition and it works remarkably well, but it requires a premium Strava account.

Yes, I am fully aware of this . Locus Map can add these (see the above linked thread). I use it all the time. IQMapReceiver can convert waypoints in a gpx track to Garmin course points but this option I never tested.
