Ski Distance Logging Issue still in 15.77

Updated to 15.77 on a Fenix 7 and the fix now populates the mileage but it includes the total mileage inclusive of the lifts….  This is the number that also updates to Strava.

curious to see if anyone still seeing this issue as well in 15.77?

thx

  • That change is welcome but please do something with wrong colors for ascents and descents in both alpine and backcountry skiing.

  • Appreciate the time you took to reply with a thoughtful answer, but "we would recommend manually pausing the activity" is unfortunately a case of too many cooks in the kitchen spoiling the broth.

Anyone with a modicum of skiing/snowboarding experience on the design/software team would know that in wearing multiple layers and thick gloves, suggesting the user "manually pause" all the time is kind of laughable.  And because of this and having "no plans to change this", I'm actively seeking alternatives and telling all the customers at my ski shop to do the same.

  • Agreed that is stupid. Too hard to go through layers and pause not to mention accidentally stopping. FIX this issue asap

  • I can fully attest that pausing (rather 'stopping', as there's no 'pause' feature) the ski activity was a total nightmare. Thick gloves and several layers to peel to reach my watch, I swore in my mind EACH time, haha!

On a couple of occasions the activity did not start as I didn't press hard enough through the thick glove and I was already rolling, couldn't peel layers upon layers of clothing to actually check the screen. 0/10, wouldn't recommend. Back in the day the current run would stop a few seconds after you stopped to wait for the ski lift.

I presume the person(s) that implemented this change have zero time on the slopes and yet this 'downgrade' is affecting hundreds if not thousands of actual skiers.

It's like the team that works on activity profiles was pressed by management to find improvements to the ski activity since nothing was 'improved' for a while now, and they just invented these 'improvements' from the office chair with zero time spent on slope actually testing it out (which would have helped them realise how garbage the new system is).

    Sad.

  • Please take this comment above directly to the design team as it fully encapsulates how nonsensical the 'manually pause" suggestion is and why the ski/snowboard profile is effectively broken.

  • as much as i love garmin for running i hate it for snowboarding/skiing. that's why i'm looking for an alternative, and this ignorant answer just added fuel to the fire

  • I remember last Christmas not to update the watch for my ski trips. It worked perfectly. Paused when i was waiting in line. Now i have upgraded to 27 on my fenix 6 and i am sure it is now not working as it used to. Not planning to ski this year but nect year, I'll be sure to check if any of the fenix still have the bug. I may go another route then. I do not remember the firmware version i was using though. Anyone remember the last working version on the 6?

  • Back then when this "improvement" of the skiing activity was done, I was looking around how other watches are handling skiing but I didn't get confirmation that any other brand is doing a better job in tracking skiing activities (but please speak up if you find one). So I think the best option we have now is to use a ciq app (Ski/Snowboard Tracker, F3b Skiing+, Skiing App Professional). I have not tested any of them yet, but they at least claim that they can do what everybody is asking for, like pausing when waiting at lifts.

  • I'm coming back one year later after the firsts griefs, and nothing has changed or been improved.

It's a shame GARMIN !!!!! When will you listen your users????

  • I realized that version 27 on the fenix 6 may have fixed that. I will not be able to check it out this year. No ski trip planned. But the firmware log says "Fixed an issue with auto pause on the Ski activity from improperly activating."
