Ski Distance Logging Issue still in 15.77

Updated to 15.77 on a Fenix 7 and the fix now populates the mileage but it includes the total mileage inclusive of the lifts….  This is the number that also updates to Strava.

curious to see if anyone still seeing this issue as well in 15.77?

thx

  • The watch has all the info it needs. Simply stating "up is lift" and "down is run" simply isn't true for watched that say they're smart. The argument "but you can ski under the lift" is only true for a handful of cases; i'd rather register them as lift because it will only go wrong a handful of times and will improve many many times.

  • WebView is just as flawed as the app (which is both a good and a bad thing)

  • The argument "but you can ski under the lift" is only true for a handful of cases; i'd rather register them as lift because it will only go wrong a handful of times and will improve many many times.

For me it's completely the other way around. Here i Austria, there are a lot if slopes below or very close to lifts, but lifts that go downhill are super rare. So your proposal to use the map to distinguish lifts and runs would not work reliably here. But for sure I agree with you that there is room for improvement.

What I can imagine could work is that they use the accelerometer to determine whether you are skiing or using a lift. There must be a considerable difference.

  • Came across this tread after having a mess of an activity today with my Fenix 8. Downhill runs being categorised as lifts, lifts being categorised as runs (even though I was gaining altitude - Open mouth)

It's sad to see after so much time there's no auto pause in the ski activity and I'm accruing time in the activity with 0km/h while waiting on the ski lift queue. Such a mess and completely illogical. I began stopping my activity while waiting to board the ski lift, and the avg spd raised from 9kmh to 30.

The ski activity on the Fenix 6 before all these 'improvements' was perfect, the run used to end when stopping at the ski lift queue. What happened? Are we downgrading instead of upgrading this experience?

  • Just as the season is about to start for me, reading this puts a damper on things. I was hoping for a major improvement over the off-season. Garmin, what gives????????

  • I actually didn't like pausing while on lift so that change was good I terms of whole day activity but it's supposed to give you correct distance and average speed of downhill only and total. What they didConfusedn't correct are colours of rides - on mobile it mixes up downhill and uphill :Confused/

  • It doesn't mix the colours only on mobile - even on GC Web about 7 of my ski lifts are showing up as downhill runs.

Here all the straight lines are ski lifts, some of them are in Red colour like the downhill runs. It's the same on other ski lifts not pictured.

Also not sure if the Slope Difficulty should actually work or it's a feature in testing.

  • Yeah it's about time they stopped adding useless features like nap tracking and focused on ensuring the core functionality works as advertised...

  •

Is there any intention for Garmin to solve this issue? It's been a hole year and the ski activity still doesn't work as intended (and it seems it's the same with the new Fenix 8).

What amazes me is that this function was working perfectly fine before they decided to mess with it. For me it would be enough to add an autopause option for, at least, recover the same level of functionality it had before. As for the lifts being counted as runs, It seems more like a garmin connect issue. I think it doesn't interfere with the run metrics.

With SW version 15.77 there was a change to ski activities. This allowed lift times to be included in the overall distance. However ski runs are still tracked as well. This is by design. And there are not plans to change this.

For other concerns, such as time spent waiting for lifts, since this does not include auto pause, we would recommend manually pausing the activity to avoid this being included.

While this is working as expected, you can submit recommendations for changes here: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/
