Ski Distance Logging Issue still in 15.77

Updated to 15.77 on a Fenix 7 and the fix now populates the mileage but it includes the total mileage inclusive of the lifts….  This is the number that also updates to Strava.

curious to see if anyone still seeing this issue as well in 15.77?

thx

  • Well I don't like the sudden uphill spikes in graphs and inaccurate tracks while riding chairlifts and I do like to know how fast they're going :) Also when riding a T-bar I'm basically doing an activity so I don't wanna pause it.

  • Its still weird. The gondola we took to get into the paradiski resort must also be used at the end of the day to go back; not enough snow for the valley run. But, Garmin thinks it is a run though.

Also, on strava I did twice the km's my girlfriend did with her venu. Hers still works "the old way".

Garmin should really fix this mess.

  • When I read paradiski I knew your were in la Plagne. We were there for new year. Great weather and snow. Hope it still the same right now. My Garmin fenix 6 with the public release does show the gondola ride but the timer is stopped and nothing is recorded. So I assume that is just the GPS track. I skied for 4 hours and had only 1:30 going downhill. I get the 4 hour pass daily depending on the weather. Did not do Champagny this time.

  • Garmin will not discriminate how you go downhill. It would be super difficult, maybe impossible, to do so. All downhill will be displayed as a ski run. Also the old Ski tracking did not pause when going downhill on a lift.

  • That's not all true. I've had a lift which went a little down and then up of which the down part got invalidated.

Also, my Fenix has a skimap so it knows the pistes and the lifts. It has all the info to know if I'm in a lift (up or down) or not.

  • Even if the watch could use the info of the map (which I think it cannot), it could not tell the difference between you skiing down on a slope underneath the lift and you going down on a lift.

I would recommend ending the activity after the last run (so before going down to the valley in the gondola) to avoid such trouble. You should also be able to remove the last gondola section afterwards in GC if you forget to end the activity.

  • i was just thinking maybe the issue is that they have only one ski activity.  It would be better to have more activitiy types. As I recall they used to have, e.g. downhill skiing and tour skiing on piste and tourski off piste. since the elite skier mostly tourski off piste, whereby the uphill should be an integral part of the tour. They use no lifts. Maybe normal holiday ski with ski lift usage should be back to a separate activity type.

  • no improvement after the new "update". I have a snowboard added to my equipment (so I know how much I actually rode on it, and not the additional kilometers it flew above the ground when I was sitting in a chair on the ski lift) and when I add it to the activity, it counts the distance together with the ski lift. not to mention Strava, where it still shows the entire distance. everything was fine before. I don't understand forcing improvements when no one asked for it. I'm seriously considering changing my watch.

  • Same here, combined with the terrible today screen in the beta of the connect app it almost feels like they are pushing you to the competition

  • Agreed. I'm looking for alternatives as well. Sad and frustrating after a lot of years.
