Anyone else experiencing battery drain issues after every update?

Since the battery drain issue a few months back (which was caused by constant connections/disconnections with the app), I have been noticing that after every update the watch seems to want to sync with the iOS app very frequently. I updated to v15 yesterday and overnight my phone battery went 20% down, and the watch 6%. This has happened after the previous update as well (I am not using beta), and I have to factory reset & restore backup to bring it back to normal.

  • Hi. Yes also getting these issues on a 7 pro.
Since update to 15.74. Battery draining from full in 3 days, even with no activities.

  • I've been following all of these steps since v12 or 13, but haven't helped

If the soft-reset after the update, and then going through the full charging cycle did not help, then there is another reason for the high battery drain. Some of the most frequent possibilities are listed below:

    • You use excessively power-hungry options such as the PulseOx, GPS, backlight - verify the settings and disable especially the nightly and all-day PulseOx options
    • You use a power hungry Connect IQ app or watchface. Uninstall all CIQ apps (including any CIQ watchfaces), to see whether it helps
    • There is an excessive usage of the Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection. That can happen for example when the watch continuously tries to download an update, and it goes on failing each time (i.e. due to low storage, communication problems, etc). Disable the BT ('Phone' option in the Controls menu) and Wi-Fi for a few days, to see whether it makes any difference
    • There is a hardware problem - if nothing of the above helps, then the watch may be defective, and may need to be replaced. Contact the Support.
  • If I did update OTA, and facing battery drain issue. Are there any ways to fix this mistake? Confused

  • I always soft reset the watch (hold the power button down and power off / on) then fully charge the watch.

I don't think it's so much a high CPU / power draw problem, as it is a battery charge level / algorithm problem after update. The full charge seems to fix that.

  • If I did update OTA, and facing battery drain issue. Are there any ways to fix this mistake?

Have a look here: Troubleshooting guide for high battery drain

  • I’m noticing same thing on 955 solar….going extremely fast

  • While I can imagine how frustrating it could be the excessive battery drain after a FW update, I have zero experience with that issue. This is applicable to my whole Garmin journey that started in year 2015 with a F3 and owning a F7x ss currently.

What I've been doing is to hard reset*

*Push & hold top left button for about 10" to get the Watch to turn off.

  • Following the steps described above, will prevent all of this.

It would be good if that was true. But about half a year ago or so, people who updated via Garmin Express got some serious issues (I think also their data on the watch erased) while people who updated via watch did not. After update of Garmin Express that was fixed, but nevertheless, it shows that update via Garmin Express is not 100% sure way to not have problems due to update.

  • Nothing is sure, you can have bugs everywhere, not only in Garmin Express. Anyway, it was a minor problem just clearing the old activities from the watch, which personally I do manually anyway. It had no impact on any metrics, and people who really needed to have old activities on the watch for some reason, could put them back. Garmin Express is still a very useful and needed program.

  • I never said it was not useful app, but I said that updating by Garmin Express can cause problems as well since you said that updating that way will prevent all problems.

In any case, if updating over the watch is so bad to cause problems by itself, then that feature should be disabled by Garmin until it is fixed to serve its purpose adequately.

Instead, we see same situation appear after every update.

On top of it, in some cases even if people disabled auto-update on the watch, they still got update installed because they connected watch with Garmin express. Go figure.
