Actually it is easy to do in connect. There is an option to split an activity into multi sport and assign a sport to each segment.

It's difficult if you didn't record it as a multi-sport event. If you want to attach your file to your post we might be able to make it happen.
Attach your fenix to a computer, then look for the activity fit file in the \GARMIN\ACTIVITY folder. Then...

I received your fit file. Since it wasn't recorded as a multisport activity, your best bet is to do what razmichael suggested...

As for what you did wrong, make sure you start your triathlon using the Multisport activity on your watch. I assume you normally do some training sessions (brick) using this, so you could test it before the next triathlon event. Mentioned earlier by Wolfindal
