Fenix 7s heart rate tracking incorrect running

Hello hello garmin fam!

I’ll prefice this by saying I do have a heart rate strap but left it elsewhere and won’t be able to get it for 2 weeks. And yes I’m wearing it correctly, long time garmin owner just newer to tracking HR for running.

I know that the strap is the best way to track HR but I’m not asking about it being slightly off, it’s about being way off. I’ve noticed on my easy runs it will say 160-171 at times and beep at me to  bring it down but then I’ll test it by using my fingers in my neck and it’s like 108.

Today was the most frustrating. Garmin recommend a threshold run of 2 6m intervals at 168bpm. Great, no problem. I did the 10m warm up in the proper zone but then the first interval my HR wouldn’t move from around 147. I waited over a minute because I have noticed it takes time to get HR up and reading to kick in but then it went even lower, like lower than my warm up bpm around 135. I couldn’t get it even close by the end of the 6m and I was running a good 2 full points faster and know by time where I should be. And then of course as soon as I was in the 2 minute lower zone it spiked and was beeping at me but for a different reason

The second interval was more correct and I ran at almost the exact same speed (added .1 for the last 30).

I did wipe the sensor just last night, I have recently restarted it, so I’m at a loss for options. Any insight from anyone else with this issue and type of watch? You can see from my graph it’s showing I didn’t hit my numbers and I’m afraid it will affect my training.

much thanks :) Katie

  • I agree that the built-in wrist HR sensor sometimes seems to guess the HR rather than actually measure it based on the recent pattern of running.

What I've seen multiple times is that the HR spikes when it should go lower, for example when switching from uphill running to downhill running. Also, during my last 100 mile race I saw my HR dropping to as low as 50. I think that is a bit off!

  • Ha yes! I did a road race up a ski mountain in early september and my heart rate was. a high of 144. No way that was my max running uphill for 3 miles! I felt like I was going to die lol.

  • I have this every now and then as well, though I usually use a HR strap.  First, I noticed the HR is less accurate when I make a tight fist or am holding onto something like a trekking pole.  If you make a tight fist when you run, it could throw the HR reading off.  Second, did you try putting your watch on the other wrist to see if it happens there too?  Worth trying as part of troubleshooting. Other than that I'd agree with others and do an update if possible.  (some people shaved their wrist where the HR sensor touches it, though I'm not sure I'd do that, lol.)

  • Haha back in my college days I did shave my arms, but that's too much work these days! I actually can't wear it on the other arm, I get a rash. Weird European descent thing! But I will pay attention to my hands, thanks so much.
