HRM Dual only partially connected?

for some reason the HRM Dual does not really connect to my Fenix 7x on a reliable basis.

Sometimes it does what its supposed to do: when starting an activity, there is a message on the watch, that an external HR is connected. And the optical sensor turns off.

But most of the times, that message does not appear and the OHR remains on (and also the HR is way off, so its clearly the reading of the crappy OHR), but still in the activity in Connect there is the HRM Dual as sensor listed with battery ok.

I already changed the battery to a brand new one.

So why is my Fenix reporting the strap as sensor in the activity summary, but is not using it during the activity?

  • Ha! @philipshambrook - didn’t know you were a kiwi.. I’m in Napier too.. (well just outside!)

  • Just as well I'm not too worried about people knowing where I am! LOL!

  • its just that Garmin does it on purpose for the WHR, there is a algorithm in the sensor that actively ignores quick changes in HR, thats whats nagging me the most. Apple shows that WHR can be super darn accurate, even when youre going from slow to fast HR in a minute or so. Garmin could do the same but they just messed up the readout of the sensor.

  • I figured out it really is also an issue with the Fenix 7!

The strap is always connected and when turning of WHR manually it works. But for some reason the fenix just does not turn off WHR automatically every time.

A clear indication is the "Ext HR connected" message when starting an activity. When this pops up, the WHR will disable itself automatically. But its extremely rare to get that message. And turning off WHR manually is a major pain in the ...

so its clearly a bug in the firmware. How can we report that?

  • I received answer from Garmin and they partially confirmed the problem. But there are multiple things that are in play:

     - When Garmin Pay is active and unlocked, the OHR will remain active just to make sure that the watch stays on your wrist

     - when Garmin Pay is active, the External HR connected message does not appear

     - there is a little heart icon underneath the GPS bar when starting an activity. When this is blinking, no strap is connected, when its solid white then external HR is recorded

So in my case it was a combination from OHR remained active due to Garmin Pay and the chest-strap did really not connect sometimes.

  • The connected external HRM should have a more obvious notification than just if the heart is flashing or static. It's taken me a ton of time to eventually find this post that explains this for my Fenix 7. I do find the Fenix 7 a little unreliable at initially connecting to either my Polar H10 chest or Verity Sense armband, so I have to manually check every time which is a pain.

I also have a Venu 2 and that is much more clear and obvious it's connected properly and it always connected first time, so the Fenix needs improving here IMO.
