Question about a watch for very active 11 and 13 year olds

I recently bought a Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar and I’m really happy with it. My two sons, who are 11 and 13 years old, could really benefit from the features it (or a smaller watch) could offer. But I’ve bought them smartwatches before (fitbit) which have hugely limited functionality and reporting for kids. They are extremely athletic, training four times a week, running, cycling, swimming, and I’d really love a watch that works in a similar way the Fenix works for me.

Any tips?

  • I would take a look at the latest Instinct.2 series (2, 2X, 2S etc). Great sport watches, rugged, can get different colors if the kids would like that.  Not much they can't do compared to the Fenix line and might appeal more to the kids.

  • I purchased my nephew an used cheap vivoactive 4s when he was 12, he used it daily until this year. Now he is 15 and i got a very cheap Fenix 6S pro. He is very happy ;) On his whrists, the „S“ variants are perfect. Bigger whatches are to heavy and big.

I would go with a Forerunner, if possible with a smaller S variant (45s, 55s, 255s). My nephew does bike downhill stuff and also the vivoactive 4s never has an issue, not broken until (2,5 - 3 years, and the whatch was 1 year old when i got it for around 100,- ).

One minor issue: The garmin app may have a problem with the age of 11! So you have to cheat and set it to 13 for the next years. I don`t understand if there is no way to use the app with the permission of the parents. There is a big gap and many young people want to make more sport and uses tec stuff and the child garmin tracker are really only for smaller childrens.
