Offline download of tracks from fenix 7

Hello

I would like to use the fenix 7 on long trekking tours, where I don't have a smartphone and no internet. So I'm completely offline, but I have a "surface go"-laptop.

Can I download the recorded tracks via USB to the "surface go"-laptop?

Thanks

Michael

  • Yes. But you can also let them stored on the watch. It has enough storage available.

  • As already mentioned, you can leave the activities on the watch. The next option would be to take a smartphone with you on the trip, and at the end of the day sync the activity via Bluetooth with the Explore app on the phone. You don't need a mobile network or internet for that. Just the Bluetooth connection between watch and phone.

  • Just remember that downloading an activity to Garmin Explore Mobile, even a small one, takes an eternity. I wish I could configure it to not sync activities.

I do not know which watch you own. I just recorded a 10km bike ride with my tactix 7 pro and synced it with the Explore App.
The whole thing took about 35 seconds.
Is that an eternity for you ?
I doubt it will be faster if you first connect the watch to the computer and then have to search for the activity in File-Explorer.

I have never found that it takes long to sync the watch with the Explore app.

I honestly don't get the point of syncing with Garmin Explore app. Let's say you synced it with Explore? Now what? What can be done with the data once it is in Explore. It seems that Explore has an account separate from Garmin Connect? Does it sync data with Garmin Connect once it gets online? The whole app frankly seems completely redundant.

Also it really annoys me that Fenix is trying to be a fitness watch and a traditional navigation device at the same time, and needs to be synced with two different ecosystems for that. That is bizarre and overcomplicated, and none of other brands does that.

  • Your request is something else. I was referring to the question of the user who created the thread:

Can I download the recorded tracks

There is a possibility to re-navigate the syncronized activity or to convert it to Explore as a track (route).

You leave the data there until you need it again. Explore is your "cloud storage" for activities, tracks, waypoints etc.

Garmin Connect is also a cloud storage for activities and courses. I don't understand why Garmin couldn't have it all in Garmin Connect. It is like Garmin Explore is meant only for users on traditional handheld devices, and using it for Fenix watches seems quite unnatural to me.

As I said, once an activity is in Explore, I don't see what I can do with it other than seeing it on the map and perhaps converting it to a track/route. Seems pointless.

Because explore manages things in collections, it is very easy to transfer only what is really needed to the watch. For example, I have my waypoints managed in regions. So I always have only the data I need on the watch. So you don't have to keep hundreds of waypoints on the watch.

This isn't a strong argument. Garmin could have implemented that in Garmin Connect.

Besides, I don't use navigation to waypoints. I only do course navigation, and occasionally routing back to start. Waypoint negotiation could be occasionally useful, but I refuse to have to sync with another app just for that. I tried that in the past and it was more trouble than it is worth, including increased battery use.

    That would not help here.

Because Connect does not work offline.

Only with Explore you have the possibility to sync things completely offline between phone and watch.

After you have synchronized things, you can close Explore again. Then you won't have a battery problem in this regard. Let the watch navigate your synced course.

Also, you can only create and sync courses completely offline with the Explore app. This does not work with connect.
