Do Suggested Workouts Account for Other Exercises, Rowing?

I mainly row instead of run. Lately I've been doing rowing sessions based on what the suggested workout is (I set the suggested workout to show heart rate instead of pace).  I'm starting to think that maybe the watch isn't taking into account the rowing sessions when suggesting new daily suggested workouts. The way I've been using daily suggested workouts is if the DSW is 30 minutes base then I'll do a rowing session that is 30 minutes base.

The reason I'm not sure it's actually taking those sessions into account is because everyday is the same 30 minute base daily suggested workout. If today is Friday and I look ahead in the week, I'll see some more variety such as vo2 or tempo on Sunday or Monday. But by the time it's Saturday, Sunday or Monday, the workouts for Sunday and Monday which were tempo/vo2 will have changed to base.  I'm thinking maybe it keeps giving base 30 minute suggested workouts because it thinks the 30 minute base rowing sessions don't count but would make me tired so it suggests another 30 minute base run.

The reason why I was trying to use the suggested workouts is to more easily balance my training effect bars. However within the last week of trying to follow the suggested workouts, because of all the base sessions it recommended, I've now exceeded the low aerobic bar and am short anaerobic. High aerobic is falling but still in the optimum bar range.

  • The simple answer is that daily workout suggestions are only for running and biking.

The reason why they don’t work well for other sports is that the watch cannot calculate a pace or power target. It  doesn’t have the data to link your VO2 to your pace or power, as all targets are % of VO2 Max. To get this data you need both a reliable data set for your running VO2 Max and some training history to build upon.

If you don’t complete your base runs, you won’t start building up that training history.

In addition, you will get additional training load, recovery needs and HRV impact from your rowing that might limit the “training room” that you would need to a harder running workout.

The reason you see other workouts in the future is that the suggestions are meeting a pre established training program, but the “start” is always delayed by the lack of running data.

  • Maybe try to use the Indoor Biking or an Indoor Running profile to complete the suggested workouts on the rower, could make a difference.
