Maps cannot unlock message on Garmin Fenix 7

Hello Good Night,

I have a garmin fenix 7 Software version 13.22 and I started having the following message when I turn on my watch, Maps cannot unlock.

How can I solve this issue? I tried turning it off and turning it on and it didn´t work.

thank you,
Best Regards.

  • Yes I don't wait to unplug when it's done any operations and never seen issues. I got a workaround by making a backup of all img files in garmin folder, then I removed the smaller (courseview) files and that fixed it for me for now as a temporary workaround. I think 7.2 courseview maps are breaking it. Not recommended but I needed a temporary fix and I think those courseview maps are already corrupted.

  • pretty amazing that garmin has zero transparency on their status page or twitter accounts and would rather sweep this crap under the rug quietly than let people know they will lock themselves out of their maps by simply connecting their watch to garmin express. let them know what you think with your money. they clearly care more about perceptions than being held accountable for premium devices. huge issue across multiple watch families that renders express unusable and not a word until people report it on forums, what does that say about the quality of their QA process for production? anybody who pays for an outdoor maps+ subscription after this eye opening experience is insane

You are welcome to your opinion but your comments are not accurate. The issue is very new but is already escalated and being worked on by engineering. Thus far, everyone is reporting they can still use all of their mapping and most experiencing the issue have resolved the error message.

  • First thanks for not deleting my post and keeping an open dialogue:

-The issue is very new but is already escalated and being worked on by engineering: that's great, but in the meantime people are going to connect their watches to express and get this same issue unless they are digging through the forums looking for problems, why is there no warning on the status page or twitter? I easily reproduced it with a friend on his epix device and now he gets the maps locked screen whenever rebooting and it checks maps, like everybody else here.

-Thus far, everyone is reporting they can still use all of their mapping: I can't test this out, my problem map as far as I can tell is CourseView Europe, Middle East & Africa version 6.8. The watch clearly says this map is locked though, this is very worrying to me, what happens when this comes back around and it locks the USA golf maps, then I would be able to test for sure, definitely seems like the locked map is inaccessible. Can anyone here verify they actually have access to the locked map?

  • This resolved the issue. Thank you!

  • Hello Chris,

Unfortunately, I can't send the file. The message about the device was saved to my desktop, so I saved it to the upload server.
Details are in a private message.

  • Is there any commonality in these incidents ?
I ask because I found no pre-installed maps on my new 7pro (without sapphire) and downloaded the Europe map myself (with GE).
They were immediately usable, I did not get a message about locked maps.

I don't really understand what's going on here, either.  I downloaded the following maps using Garmin Express (PC) to my tactix 7, Epix Gen2, and MARQ Aviator Gen 2 with no problems - all were immediately available:

    • Garmin SkiView 2023.10 Map Version 23.10
    • CourseView Americas 7.20
    • CourseView Europe, Middle East & Africa Map Version 6.80
    • CourseView Pacific Map Version 6.30

Note that the SkiView map was just a name change - Map Version stayed the same.

  • For me no maps were shown after that error (maybe because I removed and then reinstalled the topo maps using Express). I couldn't wait for a solution as I needed the maps today. So I fixed it by backing up all img files, then I found removing only the 4 courseview img files fixed all issues. Not recommended but those 4 img files seems corrupt anyway. I hope a fix is pushed for those v7.2 courseview files (fortunately I don't need those maps).

  • I've sent you private message with details. I have a consistent repro for my watch: install CourseView 7.2 in Express and everytime it gives an error and then locks all maps and no map is shown anymore. Resetting watch and removing all maps using Express didn't work. Since I needed a solution as I needed mapping today, I found backing up and removing those 4 Courseview img files fixed it. Once those CourseView (US) maps are fixed I can try to install them again.
