Fenix 7 Open Water Swimming OWS accuracy - any improvement?

Hi, Has anyone been able to verify if the Firmware updates for the Fenix 7 have improved / fixed the terrible accuracy of OWS, over the past year.

From the last conversations e.g. this one: https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/running-multisport/f/forerunner-955-series/298162/open-water-swim-distance-differs-from-the-track-recorded-todays-swimrun-352m-vs-approx-750m-unacceptable?pifragment-1279=14#pifragment-1279=14

we were waiting for those with this issue to test it again when they started swimming OWS.

After enormous frustrations with Garmins lack of care around this issue, I have moved to an Apple Ultra, which is incredibly accurate, but I do miss elements of the Fenix 7

Thanks

Dan

  • Recently I read in another thread that it seemed to be fixed. I made a simple experiment: I startet swimming mode and made a slow straight walk... the distance was ~20% short - like before when swimming. The GPS-track looked perfect.

While swimming I use a buoy and place the watch there in running mode. Everything fine, but I avoid the swimming mode.

  • Thank you. That was my experience a year ago. I guess I have read enough. The issue hasn't been fixed, people with the problem are as frustrated as ever, and Garmin doesn't seem to care. As a bonus, Philip Shambrook is still loving his watch and doesn't have an issue.

I will stick with the Ultra. Even though it is far from perfect, and has a terrible UX / UI, with bizarre omissions of simple capability, it seems to measure distance accurately, which is what I care about and seems a basic requirement of a sports watch. Plus I can go for a swim without taking my phone.

Thank you everyone for your feedback.

  • I tested this today and I can say that I have problem with openwater swim activity one year ago or so and today, its fixed! At least for me. Map is very accurate, it surprise to me since GPS doesn't work underwater. And my tempo and swolf is also improved, it matched my previous watches, which was 6X, now I have Tactix 7, and I'm so happy to see this improved.

  • The issue hasn't been fixed,

Hmm. I wonder who's right?...and not to forget the people who posted in this thread saying that OWS accuracy was fixed. I think forum users will be able to decided for themselves who's right; those people (other than me) saying it is fixed based on actual use in the open water or those who say it's not fixed without any recent experience of swimming with the watch.

BTW, walking on land using OWS is not the same as swimming in the water. Just sayin' ...

  • All of them are right. Everyone speaks from their experience. Not all people have same problems, as usual.

Regarding OWS, no one said that it is same as walking. But that does not explain why is there such big discrepancy. Just sayin'.

  • I tested this today again and if you get out of the water, the watch catches GPS and recalculate possible distance difference, you can see distance jumps in meters. And to me its as accurate as my previous 6X. If you look on screenshots from current and previous firmwares, you can see difference in a time, swolf, pace. The time of my swim is almost double! And from my experience I can say that on older firmware its frustrating to do such a swim. For me its fixed and I'm happy to see this improvement.

    • Since its fixed, I don't have any problem anymore. I only want to show difference between 8.19 and 13.22 firmware. GPS doesn't work underwater. Problem in older firmware 8.19 is some algorithm that estimate distance that I swim by movement or something. So I've to swim twice as long to actually get let say 1000m. Now on 13.22 firmware this distance estimation is accurate. On both of my activities I've got same pace in real world, its just 8.19 that only calculated this wrong.
    • Time is right on both I've actually have to do 54 minute swim, now it takes me 35 minutes to do same swim training, same distance. I've just want to say that for me and my watch I've consider this bug fixed and resolved and hope that other people feels same about this case.
    • If you look closer the two screenshots that I've post earlier are two different activities, first is 1 year old, and second is from yesterday, same watch but different firmware versions.
  • I wonder why someone voted this post down? Would have thought everyone would have been happy this has been reported as resolved.

  • another try: 100% freestyle swimming in the lake with the Openwater swimming profile.

    Fenix 7X: 1374m

    GPS-Track (looks extremely accurate): 1570m

Manually klicked the track in google earth with about 20 waypoints to verify the track: 1550m

On par with my experience when i tried to use this profile while slowly walking.

  • I know for sure that until 10.33 firmware, open water swim was ok. I just tried today with 13.22 and distance is way off again.
