Fenix 7 Open Water Swimming OWS accuracy - any improvement?

Hi, Has anyone been able to verify if the Firmware updates for the Fenix 7 have improved / fixed the terrible accuracy of OWS, over the past year.

From the last conversations e.g. this one: https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/running-multisport/f/forerunner-955-series/298162/open-water-swim-distance-differs-from-the-track-recorded-todays-swimrun-352m-vs-approx-750m-unacceptable?pifragment-1279=14#pifragment-1279=14

we were waiting for those with this issue to test it again when they started swimming OWS.

After enormous frustrations with Garmins lack of care around this issue, I have moved to an Apple Ultra, which is incredibly accurate, but I do miss elements of the Fenix 7

Thanks

Dan

  • The issue is not that thr problems appear, but that serious problems (and I consider those to be related to OHR measurement, OWS measurement, etc) are not being resolved but forgoten. I have seen enough of those topics go into oblivion even though serious question were left unanswered.

Just because majority of users do not have same problems, does not mean that problems do not exist and if serious, should be resolved.

10-20 users that report the problem is actually a lot more than you would think because majority of Garmin users do not even visit this forum.

Lastly, if someone bothers to write about a problem at hand, it would be more beneficial to try to solve it instrad of trying to persuade him that problem does not exist (as some of users here regularly do).

  • it's nothing to do with 'proof or evidence' as suggested. It's wanting to see what is being experienced so that those without the problem can better understand what might be happening and perhaps help to resolve. Nothing is added when people post without any experience of the problem being discussed but simply to post something because they believe without thought what is written on the internet.

How do you know it is resolved? You did not have issues with OWS, so you cannot know if it was fixed.

How do you know if it is resolved? Did you have issues with OWS? What did those problems with OWS look like in your case? What do those same OWS activities look like now a year later? Would you share a current OWS activity compared to one a year ago?

  • I know you are a big Garmin defender, but I really don't know why you are so aggressive to people who are simply annoyed about spending so much money on a product that doesn't work as advertised. We are not idiots, we know when something doesn't do as stated. Maybe your version works fine (and appears to always have), but mine didn't (so I took it back), and there are plenty of similarly frustrated people - still, so it seems.

This whole issue has been discussed at length in various threads and Garmin has done nothing about vs. the content of these threads a year ago, which is a shame. So I will not be buying another. Establishing that was the whole point of my asking the question.

No issues , on longer swims solar helps. Fairly accurate in multiband, every second tracking. Very happy with F7x Sapphire.

  • Look at the photos - I didn't stop and I swam in a steady pace.

    Something is defenetely wrong....

  • I fully agree. Constantly trying to defend Garmin is not helping users.

  • No amount of proof is enough for you. Garmin never stated that it fixed the problem. Thus, problem was not resolved. Some people have it, some people do not, same as last year.

  • See my reply to the thread you started.

  • It's not a question of defence of Garmin, simply a presentation of facts. It's all too easy to focus only on the negative reports and ignore the positive ones. I've demonstrated in the past that the F7 has improved distance and track compared to the F6. There is also a post in this thread from someone who did have a problem with OWS reporting that for him it is fixed, and another stating that he has no issues. Yet still these comments are overlooked. it pays to remember that most people post in these forums about problems. Very few return to report when an issue reported has been fixed. Changes have been made to the GPS tracking in open water; improvements and changes that are positive. That people who did post about problems with the F6 in the open water have not reported either a continuation of their problem or an improvement does not mean there hasn't been any. The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. The GPS in the F7 is very different to the F6 and has seen various updates to the GPS chip that are never explained. So, while Garmin has not explicitly stated a direct improvement to OWS tracking it is clear that there have been marked improvements.

My mother always used to tell me that if I had nothing to contribute to a discussion then it's better not to contribute. In this case, I feel that I have contributed something. It's up to other posters to judge the contribution of others who simply damn Garmin without demonstrating the problem they might or might not be experiencing.

  • Several users have already seen you as non objective Garmin defender. There are reasons why people see you as such.

Facts remain that this problem was reported long time ago, Garmin took a long time to even respond with generic (we will forward it to our engineering team) message and gave no statement about fixing the issue from then. Yet, you overlook those facts.
