Weather overlay on map shows wrong wind speed?

Hi,

The wind speed displayed on the new Fenix 7 Pro weather widget, in the map overlay, seems wrong to me. Currently, at my location, the weather widget itself (on its page 1 of the widget) displays a wind speed of "21 E". However if I go the last page of the widget with the map, and overlay the "Wind", it shows 24-26 in my area - and also, it shows a wind direction of NE, not E.

I have a few issues/questions here:

1) What is the unit that's used in the first place? It's really not obvious. In general, I've configured my watch for metric units, so I could assume it's km/h (kph), but it's really not obvious. It's also not obvious whether the widget and the map overlay use the same unit, as one shows 21, the other shows 24-26.

Just for comparison I've checked my local weather provider's website and it shows 15 km/h wind East direction, gusting 29 km/h. So - not really what either the Garmin widget nor the overlay are showing.

Is it the wind speed or the gust speed that's displayed?

The wind direction of the widget (E) is also significantly different from what the map shows (NE) and from my local weather provider (E).

Any insights please?

Thank you.

  • You may be better off checking your nearest airport weather forecast as Garmin may be taking information from there, (they usually do) and not your local weather station like Openweather does.

Can't wait for this feature though to hopefully trickle down to the 7 non pro range as suggested by DC rainmaker and others.

    All the best.

Ps... Temps should be the same as the watches settings I would hope, it normally is for other weather features.

  • Thanks! Well I did check a few weather forecasts in the region, and while they're all fairly consistent, they differ from the Garmin one. Also, as I mentioned, Garmin's forecast differs from its own - the Weather Widget shows different wind speeds and directions from the map overlay. And it's also not clear at all what units they use and whether it's (base) wind speed or gusts. Normally the wind is given in two numbers like 10/20, meaning wind is 10 gusting 20 (with the appropriate unit).
