External HR strap picked up in error

Not a new FW related problem - but just an irritating one.

I have an issue whereby my watch is picking up my loose laying HR strap(s). It is okay when I go out for a run, because it goes out of range. But for something like strength training, it is a bit of a mess.

Is there a way to disable external strap usage for certain activities? Or how can I get around this issue? Because obviously a strap laying on the rack where I store it, does not send out any meaningful HR values.

  • If your HR belt is continuously sending a signal, it's not the way it should. If it's not worn (detect HR), it should go to idle a few minutes later.

  • True for Garmin straps, but maybe not true for other brands, I'm not sure.

My Stryd foodpod, for example, will always be picked up by my watch whenever I star an activity near it, even if it's just been sitting in a drawer for the last week. Maybe some other brand straps are the same way.

  • To get around this, you can temporarily disable the HR strap in the Sensors & Accessories menu in your watch. But you'll have to remember to turn it back on again next time you want to use it. I'm not aware of any way to have it automatically enable or disable certain sensors for certain activities unfortunately.

Or, switch to an HR strap that behaves the way AgentMax described; any Garmin strap should go into standby and not get picked up by the watch when you're not wearing it.

  • ah that stryd pod drives me crazy. every single thing i do makes the watch want to connect to it, and then when i actually want to use the damn thing it has a low battery

i have had not one time ever that my hrm has turned on and wanted to connect unexpectedly (polar h10). it will only pair if i'm strapped up and ready to use it

  • Thanks guys - you touched some interesting correlations.

I do have a Garmin strap - but I cannot remember that ever having been picked up whilst idle. The one that is usually picked up is another one - and interestingly enough, also a power-related strap. PowerTap or something - I only use it on MTB, so last time was about 2 weeks ago! (Power meter is on my gravel bike.)

Another coincidence - it also has low battery. But it does not get that often.

Appreciate the input - seems it's a blind alley.

  • Polar H10s can be a bit flaky if you don't wash them enough resulting in poor battery life. If you want to ensure that the H10 goes to sleep after a workout, remove the pod from the strap.
