watchOS 10

Topographic maps, cycling sensors, compatibility with TrainingPeaks... improvements that will arrive on most of Apple devices... Garmin, you only have the battery life to compete against the Apple Watch...

I have had the fenix 3 HR, the fenix 5, the fenix 5 plus, the fenix 6 and the fenix 7 and now I am considering switching to Apple Watch, not only because it already has most of the things that I missed, but because I guarantee that for 4 or 5 years my watch will be updated with the latest software news, not like Garmin, one or a maximum of two generations, your €900 watch becomes obsolete because you don't feel like updating the new software.

I'm not saying that I'm unhappy, I'm just saying that you have to improve those small details to build customer loyalty, not just to make money.

Regawds!!

I agree in that Apple watch is overcoming Garmin in a lot of aspects. For instance, HR accuracy, sleep tracking accuracy, etc. It is still lagging in other aspects, but I think they are quickly catching up.

If Apple does something interesting with the strength training profile, for people interested in strength or bodybuilding, I will ditch my garmin for an apple. The current strength training profile in Garmin is useless.

  • But probably missing a lot of activities and statistics Garmin is doing.

Can an Apple Watch record activities and show notes at the same time?

Can I follow a planned strength training with it.

I would miss the passive display of the Fenix.

Can I use my own watch face?

We are in 2023, those requirements are a given, since they only requiere some programming and not a complex algorithm.

So, yes. The Apple Watch can do those things since the last update. The only doubt that I have is if it can programm a strength workout (I know that you can program your workouts in general with training peaks).

Currently, Garmin still has an advantage in some of their algorithms, such as, HR variability and recovery.  But we are in 2023 ans Garmin is charging 1000€ for some of their watches. They can't sell us basic software features as if they were superadvanced anymore. Chat GPT could develop those basic features if they feed it with the source code of Garmin Connect

  • well said friend. last time i say something similar they remove my post and they don't let me login. Apple start to be very competitive and the only answer from Garmin is about "'battery for weeks not hours". Ton  of bugs. Report of bugs to Chris but what he can do? He is only one person who try and help the forums. I dont know really.

What I wanted to say is that in 2010 you could try to sell that being able to follow an structured workout from your watch was an advance feature, even if the user interface to programm your workout on Garmin Connect is unintuitive and very time consuming, even if you can programm workouts for free using a pen and a pice of paper. But in 2023, if you want to be on top, if you want to charge big money for a watch, that is not enough. You should be able to provide some insights or advance data into your training (recovery, training volume, suggestions for strength and hypertrophy, suggested strength workouts and predictions of your suggested sets and weights...)

Apple doesn't have any of that yet. But they are developing way faster than Garmin because they realize that in 2023 you can only win with software (a lot of companies can make a good sport watch hardware wise). And the best part: all Apple watches will be fully feature updated at least for 5 years, just like Coros watches.

Garmin needs to step up their game if they want to preserve the position that they have now in the current sport watch market.

  • First they can start from the basics and then they can go advanced. For example, record naps or record a simple walk. My simple vivomove HR can record an activity without press a simple button! Specially naps? cmon Garmin... Your algorithm most of the times is wrong cause only record sleep etc.

Yes. Garmin sleep algorithm is not good (apple or google and fitbit do it way better). But I understand that developing that might be difficult.

But what about pressing one of your sets in a recorded strength training activity and being able to see a graph with your last months weights and repetitions for that exercise? It can't do it. Garmin Connect doesn't have that feature even if the strength activity has been with us for almost a decade. How is that posible? Why on earth I would want to record my workout if I can't compare my results lifting weights over time? So, there you have it. I bet a single developer from Garmin could implement that feature on Garmin Connect within a couple of weeks. But it ain't gonna happen.

Basically, I agree with you, but I wanted to point out the real dimensions of the problem with another example LOL

  • Friend, they have so many problems and they know it. What It pisses me off is the simple bugs that they not fixing still.
