How do you set up power zones for running on a Fenix 7? Thanks

I have been training using HR zones, but for short VO2Max intervals I would like to switch to power zones. The default zones on my Fenix 7 see me working almost exclusively in zone 5 (my estimated FTP according to Garmin is 200, not sure how they got to that value).

Is there any way to better estimate my FTP without a footpod?

thanks for any feedback

  • When was you last guided threshold test?
You find it in training - threshold test when you are in the running activity. The watch tries to estimate you lactate threshold and set you power zone afterwards based on the results. The best chance to get an accurate result (or any  at all) is to wear an external ANT+ heart rate monitor.

  • Thanks for your reply Sitronen.

My LTHR is correctly set at 166, also confirmed by Training Peaks software which I am using. So all my HR zones are set reliably. But there seems to be a discrepancy between these and the power zones, because my FTP is probably wrong.

Point in case: yesterday I did a recovery run and I was in Zone 1 (HR) for most of the time, but according to the power zones, I spent all the time in zone 5. So to me it boils down to a lack of correspondence between LTRH and FTP.

  • The 200W is the default the watch has.

As  said, you can complete the running threshold test. This will give you your FTP for running and automatically set your running power zones.

Alternatively, you could do a running field threshold test: after warmup, run the fastest, but steady, pace you can for 30 mn and take 95% of the last 20mn.

I recommend against using the FTP auto-detection except for real threshold runs: interval runs at high pace/power are likely to give you an underestimated FTP and/or LTHR

Of course, you need to enable the native Garmin running power on the watch, and use a chest HR monitor to get the necessary HR and HRV data to the watch.

  • What @estupes wrote: I recommended the test not because of the LTHR but because the watch tries to set the power zones based on your running. The test could give it the informations to correct the running power zones.

  • Thanks guys for your input.

I will try to do the test as you recommend, although I would have thought that Garmin automatically set the FTP if you have already the LTHR.
