Suggestion: count cycling as steps

Hi,

I would like to have the option to count cycling as steps. Somedays I do cycle a bit instead of walk, and would be great to have it count as exercise as well in form of steps.

  • Yes, but you go for a walk in this scenario.

So there is something to count at least. The algorithm just works best  at the wrist, because it is a watch. But while cycling there is no step and pedaling is not comparable as steps in my opinion.

  • Hi Tray, thanks for a sensitive answer. I agree that for the request I gave, a different dedicated step counter would do probably a better job. And I agree that it is not the main target of a Garmin Fenix the functions outside any activity. When I read that MoveIQ can detect cycling, I would assume it has enough sensitivity to know that a specific movement corresponds to cycling, and probably can more or less deduct the moves as steps. Of course will not be exact, as the steps are not exact anyway when you transport bags, walk with hands in the pocket etc.

I do not want to change the priorities of Garmin on developing the activities. Just found that could be a complement to the MoveIQ to have the cycling detection transformed - on user request - into steps.

I find that adding more features, even if some people find non-sense, it should not be blamed.

I also find non-sense that you cannot delete the Golf maps from the Garmin Fenix, but not blaming the choice. I'm sure some people find it important.

  • I can go for a walk with my watch in my shirt pocket, instead of wrist, and it counts steps.  Step counting does not require  arm (ankle?) swing.

That's right. It needs some acceleration curve, not necessarily an arm swing. And when you hold the bike handlebars (or push a stroller, etc), there is no such curve, hence no steps can be detected.

Go to Polar brand. They count everything like "steps".

    Beers too?

Yes, indeed the watch does that, and it converts any of your activities (regardless whether it is walking, running, cycling, weight lifting, or chess playing) to Calories and also to Intensity Minutes. Those are the relevant numbers. Converting cycling to steps makes absolutely no sense, unless you want to count the number of pedal strokes for some reason. And in that case you can just follow my advise from the earlier post.

If you desire to monitor how much effort you did during your cycling, look at the Calories and/or Intensity Minutes - those will tell you whether you did some effort, or not. Some artificially generated steps, just based on the time of the cycling will not tell you anything about the effort you did - you could just take a ride down the hill for 20 minutes and the effort will be close zero. In contrary if you take a steep hill up, you can burn much more energy than if you walked for the same time on a flat terrain generating true steps. Forget the steps, they have no value. Use Calories, Intensity Minutes, or even better the Training Effect and Training Load.

  • Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions. The "intensity minutes" match what I would be looking for: something that counts all effort also outside any activity.

It is however a pity that the "intensity minutes" only weekly goals hat, and not daily goals. I could than change my original suggestion to: "Add possibility of setting daily goal for "intensity minutes". When I mean daily goals, I mean something that can alarm me when I achieve that, without that I've to go looking on the watch what is the current value.

    Cheers
