Time difference between watch and Tim-System on Race

Hi, I noticed that the difference between the running time on my Fenix 7X and the timing system (Mika timing) is quite large.

both at the marathon last week and at the half marathon this week a time difference of 5 and 7 seconds has occurred. i never need to press the start button so long that 5-7 seconds pass. the problem has occurred with both the 11.28 and the new 13.09.

does anyone have the same problem?

  • Your watch is probably fine. Any difference between your watch timer and the official race timer can be a result of one of the following:

    1. The operator of the race timing system does a lousy job (I've seen this on many occasions, although unlikely on large WA certified marathons).

    2. The operator of the race timing system times a different thing than you, i.e. the timing sensor that takes your time is not where you think it is.

And if still you suspect that there's something wrong with your watch, then it's super-easy to verify. Just run your watch timer against another stopwatch (in a normal watch or on your phone) for an hour or so, and see if there's any difference.

I doubt that very much. Usually there is more than one timing mat at the start and finish of a major race, and you don't know exactly at which position your Mika chip is logged. Please watch this video at 1:53:23, which you've already commented :D

So how can you synchronize the Mika timing with your watch? You probably press the start/stop button when you run through the start/finish arcs. But that may not be identical to the Mika timing system. And please note that your 5-7 seconds difference is for the start and finish together.

Also, if your watch measures such an inaccurate time period, the GNSS satellite trilateration for position determination isn't possible.

And finally congrats on your success.

  • Yes, had the same and no one (including Garmin tech) have been able to resolve.
