how do I add the trail maps from AllTrails onto my downloaded maps?

I understand the download GPX, upload to Garmin Connect, then Send to Device. but the downloaded map doesn't show the trail map, only the route. it's hard to improvise and explore when you can't see the rest of the trail map. anyone know how to get the full trail maps downloaded onto the watch?
