How to turn off interval registration when creating laps? Feature or Bug?

Where can I turn off the interval registration for a running activity while recording manual laps on a Fenix 7?

When I start a normal running activity and press the lap button for each round, the Fenix 7 automatically registers intervals on top of the laps/rounds. Older watches only registered the rounds/laps, no intervals. The real problem here is that the Fenix 7 often misinterprets the type of each lap as you can see in this screenshot. Therefore I only want to see the rounds/laps and I don't want to see them grouped by interval.

You see that this looks likes you have started an interval training with Open Repeats, but I didn't start such training. I started a normal running activity.

I have contacted their support a month ago and since then they are all over the place with totally unrelated answers. They just don't seem to grasp the problem (not even after a step by step explanation).

What I do

  • I start a running activity as explained here.
  • So press Start.
  • Select the running activity.
  • Press Start to start the activity timer.
  • Press Lap for each round.

What I don't do

  • I don't start an interval workout as explained here.
  • Press Start.
  • Select the running activity.
  • Hold the menu button.
  • Select Training > Intervals.
  • Select Open Repeats.
  • Press Start to start the activity timer.
  • Press Lap for each round.

Who know if and where this can be switched off? Or is this a bug?

Thanks
JP

  • I wrote because it says “Once the activity is uploaded, the Garmin ConnectTm platform will automatically categorize your lap key selections into running intervals. ” not that a watch categorizes. I mean all the watches with pace would be capable for this (non-wanted) feature, but Garmin controls it via GC.

Like in case of cars where some extra is built into the car, but the main software  of the car does not allow its use, because you did not order and pay for the extra.

  • My issue is having to use Garmin Connect at all. My Forerunner 235 has the splits on the watch, my Forerunner 965 does not. With the 235 I'd never bother looking at an app on mobile or desktop, I wouldn't even dream of trying to open a .fit file.

965 is a step backwards, Garmin simply trying to be too smart with this feature.

  • Thank you for posting this, I thought I was going crazy looking for forums. This is the worst feature and it recently started tracking these random intervals when I did the last update. Ugh

  • I wrote because it says “Once the activity is uploaded, the Garmin Connect

That's what it says, but it's not quite true.

It's obvious that the auto-interval categorization is done on the watch, because when you review the activity on the watch, original laps are hidden in favour of the auto intervals. And when you look at the individual intervals on the watch, you can see the type of the non-work intervals, such as warmup, rest and recovery.

It is very easy to recreate by pressing LAP manually on the watch during a run to break up periods of alternating hard/easy effort.

e.g. If I go for a steady state run (with auto laps at every km), then do strides at the end (with rest between the strides), if I press LAP at the beginning and end of each stride, the watch will definitely detect intervals. If I review the activity on the watch, the activity will broken down into intervals corresponding to the strides/rest periods (with one large interval for the entire part of the activity before the strides), and all of my original laps will be unavailable.

I find this pretty annoying, since it means I'm not able to review the original laps on the watch.

(To be clear, I have not selected any kind of "intervals" feature on the watch before doing this - no pre-programmed workout, no on-device interval workout, no Track Intervals activity.)

  • Também achei péssima a função, irritante e imprecisa

  • I know this is an old post, but there is a fix to this issue.  Here’s what I did on my Vivoactive 5 and it recorded each lap (though they are called intervals) and can be read on the watch as well as in Garmin Connect.

I did this on Garmin Connect on an Android phone.

Garmin connect – More – Training and Planning – Workouts – Create a Workout – Run – (Under Steps) select Run and set Duration Type = Lap Button Press – then choose whichever name you want for the next interval, I chose “Rest” and Duration Type = Lap Button Press – then REPEAT the pattern X amount of times ( I chose 10, though I never do 10, Just end the run as you normally do) – then name the workout and save.

On your watch, For your Run, choose Run – Workout – choose the one you created.  Start as normal, use the lap button as you normally would.  Save at the end.

Once you are done, you can see each of the laps (called Intervals) on your watch.

    Hope this helps.

  • EDIT: deleted original response which needlessly explained what auto-interval categorization is

  • Thanks for your response.  I do not have the depth of knowledge regarding this that others do.  I had read this thread as I was struggling with the auto interval categorization also.  I was just seeking to see the time periods of when I hit the lap button.  I tried the way I described today and it gave me my exact times of when I pushed the lap button, no auto interval categorization.  And it was on my watch to view as I was cooling down.   Thus for me, this gave me what I was seeking. Before, I got one or two big intervals which is not what I wanted.  I realize I may not understand the complexities of this.  Thanks.

  • Thanks, it's an interesting workaround to create a generic programmed workout where every step ends on LAP press, but that's kind of a band-aid. Initially I didn't understand the workaround, hence my response which wasn't super relevant to what you said. Sorry about that!

However, following such a programmed workout doesn't give you exactly the same user experience as just going for a normal run without a programmed workout.

For example, when you press LAP on a programmed workout, the watch will display a workout-specific screen with fixed fields, as opposed to the normal customizable lap screen. Same goes for any auto laps that occur during the workout: you get a (different) workout specific screen, not the normal lap screen.

Another issue is that you won't get any user alerts during a programmed workout.

Not sure if there are any other relevant differences, but my point is it's not the same thing.

  • Agreed, it's not the same.  I was discouraged with the Auto interval categorization, but this workaround gives me what I needed.  I did get the workout specific screen, but I also got my two customized screens which was helpful.  As you stated, I did not get my user alerts.  Thanks for your insight.
