Connect Garmin Fenix 7 to indoor trainer

Hi,

I am using my Garmin Fenix to record my Indoor Zwift Trainer rides.
So my Wahoo Kickr Core trainer is connected, as well as to Zwift using ANT-FEC, as well as to my Garmin Fenix watch also using ANT.
Zwift does have Trainer Control because apparantly it overrules my Garmin Trainer Control.
This is good because the main reason for recording the ride to Garmin is because of Recovery Time and Training Readiness kind of stuff, not for controlling my Trainer.
Controlling my trainer is the task for Zwift.

Last week I used the Xert app to control my trainer instead of Zwift controlling it.
During the Xert workout i did on the Xert app my Garmin was able to takeover the Trainer Control from Xert which is obviously not a good idea during an Xert workout.
So now I am wondering if it is possible to connect my Garmin Fenix only with the Power Sensor and Heart Rate sensor and get proper Recovery Time and Training Readiness out of that recording.
I am wondering because no speed of cadence or trainer control sensor will be connected to the Garmin Fenix.

Anyone any clues if this will work?
What will happen with speed and distance if no speed sensor is connected?

Thanks for any reply.

  • You connected the trainer as a trainer. Therefore the watch tries to control it. Connect it seperat. So power, speed, cadence. Than everythin would be recorded, but the watch is not able to "give commands".

But i just would record with the app and not with the watch. Garmin now calculates everything which is useful by itself now i think

  • Thanks!

Problem is that the Wahoo Kickr Core Trainer only provides connection to "Trainer"  (which includes sensor metrics for speed, cadence and power)  and "Power", which is Power only from the trainer.
Therefor it is not possible to connect to speed and cadence separatly. It is included in the "Trainer" connection but then you get Trainer Control included.
The lack of separate cadence I have resolved by buying a single Wahoo Cadence sensor that I attached to the crank and works on its own.
The lack of separate speed I am uncertain about. What will happen if I dont use any speed? Will Garmin calculate it based upon the power and cadence it receives?

As for recording using the watch. If I dont use the watch but the app only Garmin does not calculate Recovery Time, Training Readiness, etc.
It is Garmins sneaky way to enforce use of the watch in recording activities.

  • It is Garmins sneaky way to enforce use of the watch in recording activities.

No it's not and I think you're over complicating things. I don't start any activity on the watch and also take my watch off every time I use Zwift with my Kickr Core (avoids one more thing to wash too) and it syncs and updates my training load properly every time. You just have to connect the Zwift app to Garmin connect so that Zwift sends the rides to Connect when you save it. Connect then syncs the ride to your watch and updates Training Load, Recovery Time etc.

  • Just disable the „trainer“ sensor in your watch. My watch will still connect the „powermeter“ sensor to the trainer that will deliver power, speed and cadence. I only use the „trainer“ sensor if I want to do a tour, for example Tour of Watapia“, and also want to do my workout during this time. So I connect in the different way. Zwift will only see the powermeter form the trainer, the watch will use „trainer“ sensor and „powermeter“ and is so able to control the trainer.

  • really just connect the services to garmin and do not wear the watch. Garmin will take care of everything. Vor Vo02 Max and such garmin only uses HR and Power to calculate everything, no speed or such. Garmin will sync everything to the watch and recovery time and such will be present. So no need at all for double recording

  • Exactly what I am looking for, thanks. I didn't knew that speed and cadence is also delivered if only the power sensor is being used. Thanks!

  • You missed the point that if you dont record via your Garmin watch you wont get Recovery Time and Training Readiness updates.

  • Recovery Time and Training Readiness wont be updated if you dont record using the watch

  • You missed the point

I don't think I did and I've stuck with Zwift for precisely this reason. After I finish with Zwift it automatically syncs with Connect (which then does a back-and-forth sync with the watch a few times), and like magic my Recovery Time, Training Readiness and Training Load have all been adjusted as I expect. As I said above, I do not start any activity on the watch.

  • Yes it does, at least for me.

You also missed one thing i mentioned. Garmin does not NEED speed and cadence to calculate training status. I never said with just a power sensor you get these values. This is not the case. if you want this data you have to connect the sensor. Therefore i said it is not worth the hassle. Just leave the watch be and connect the service to garmin. Easier and all data is captured and used
