Fenix 7X Wrong training effect (11.28)

I have a Fenix7X and the training effect is often overestimated. Today I had an easy long run, always staying within Z1-Z2, and it calculated "Tempo" as primary benefit. Based on other threads it's a common issue, and in some models it should be fixed, but it's definitely a miss on my watch. It's not fixed in connect as it was for others.

My SW version is 11.28. I recently updated my HR zones, and I wonder if for any reason the watch still did the calculation on the old one.

  • It is not true, at least not for me and Garmin algorithms.

Here is my today run: average pace 6:15min/km, Average HR 134 bpm, Training effect primary benefit: Tempo

And yesterday: average pace 6:22min/km, Average HR 140 bpm, Training effect primary benefit: Base

Comparing numbers, it should be opposite, at least in my opinion.

  • I am sorry, but it is like I am saying. Also, for Garmin, Z2 Base run is on your 80% of your HRmax.

So, stay under your 80% of your HRmax for, at least, 80% of the total run, and you will get Base as training effect.

  • Did you even try to look on data I posted?
For run I was 80% Z3 and below Garmin says Tempo, for run almost 40% above Z3 says Base.

I would say, it is not so easy relation and other factors are included in calculations.

  • Please note that you are able to configure your zones as you want, but your 80% of HRmax is not varying.

Sorry but again you ar not right, your HR Max will decrease with your age.
But going this way my HR Max is measured at 176bpm, that mean 80% of it lends on top of Zone3 set by Gamin.
I repeate my question why run with 80% in Z3 or below is Tempo and another with 40% above is Base?

And regarding HR zones settings I prefere to set these reflecting to %LTHR instead of HR Max.
HR Max it is something what come with your physiologe and only will drop down with your age, instead of it LTHR will chage and go up with your condidtion progres.

  • Sorry, but I cannot help you anymore. I can just repeat myself: if you want a Base training effect, stay under your 80% of your HRmax for, at least, 80% of the workout.

  • I’m not expecting your help.
I’ve provided these examples to show that generalisation you did not works always and for all.

    Best regards.
    Adam.

  • ok, so the question is then: Does Garmin care about the set HR zones when assessing Primary Benefit?

No, Garmin doesn't use your HR zones to determine the TE. They use your HR Max, HR bpm, HR bpm rate of change, work vs rest intervals, and pace information to estimate the contribution of the aerobic and anaerobic systems by estimating the Excess Post-exercise Consumption. The peak EPOC of the workout, combined with your training history determines the TE.

  • This could be due to incorrect max heart rate on the watch or garmin connect

    Yes, this is very possible!

  • I would just like to tag onto this thread - I have a Fenix 7 Pro and have have just got back from a 3.5 mile run with the dogs at all zone 2 or lower and get TEMPO at the end... My max HR is set correctly, I use LTHR% for zones and I have Vo2max turned off for the dog running activity (clone of trail run).

I have a theory that pace could be used rather than heart rate to define training effect since although my run is in low zones, the dogs pull so I go generally about 1 - 2 minutes per mile faster for the same heart rate. This is the second time it has shown what should be a recovery run as a tempo run with the dogs.
