RHR, HRV readings during sleep ONLY

If one was to turn off the OHR sensor for 24/7 tracking, but setup a hotkey to turn it on/off when sleeping/waking up wouldn't this still track HRV and RHR? I would think that the most accurate time to track HRV and RHR would be when you are sleeping.

Would the watch calculate those metrics with just overnight OHR sensor data?

Thanks.

  • I believe it will work. Like if only wear your watch to sleep.

But it's recommended to do it some time before going to bed so it can better detect when you go sleep.

  • No. It will not work. These metrics are used to calculate for example stress level and your body battery which is used to estimate your fatigue which is taken under consideration for daily suggestions.
    BTW

Why you need to switch off OHR during day?

  • Yes, it will work. You will get HRV and RHR as they are indeed measured during the night. As others have pointed out, you will miss the stress metrics.

Despite the lack of continuous stress evaluation:

    - BB is still available when you put the watch on. It is probably a straight line extrapolation based on the time of the day and is therefore meaningless

    - the training readiness is still available (no stress history available) but is probably hampered. I got used to dismissing the training readiness as it was often off because of erroneous very low sleep scores.

I was trying to avoid false sleep detections during the day. I tried to use the battery saver during the day, but this is not really a power mode for general use, and it turns off automatically after an activity.

I tried what you describe but then I had to turn the WHR back on for certain activities (like walking) where I don't care about accurate HR.

I end up not wearing the watch outside of activities and sleep. It is funny: as I dial back the wearing, I realize how "liberating" it is not to wear a big sports watch all day. I don't use the watch any longer as a fitness tracker (except for sleep at this point) or as a smart watch (I turned notifications off).

I plan to stop using the watch during sleep as soon I as I am done optimizing my sleep therapy, or find an affordable, more accurate sleep tracker.
