Migrating from Stryd Power to Garmin

Long story short. I have been using Stryd for many years and love using running 'power' as a baseline metric for estimated zones etc. I have had four pods over the years, lost one, water damage to two, last night my pod was destroyed by a rat in our outbuilding Disappointed

I am fed up with replacing this piece of kit (now nudging twoards €300 a pop) and would like to migrate to Garmin power but.....

Using Training Peaks and WKO all my history is with Stryd power. If I now start using Garmin native power that is typically 100 (+/-)  higher than Stryd my TSS figures will shoot North.

Is the transition as simple as increasing my FTP in TP and WKO by an arbitrary figure? If so anyone shoot me a reasonable estimate of the difference?

Is there a way to generate a CP using Garmin power?

Any feedback appreciated.

  • When I did this, the first time I used the Garmin power I ran a 5k race (by myself) and let the Garmin calculate the run FTP for me.  I'd have to dig through some old data to see the delta between my Stryd and Garmin CP.  I don't use WKO but with TP you can have it recalculate the metrics on the workout after you have updated the CP value and zones so it doesn't have a TSS for that workout that is significantly incorrect.

That said, I personally found the Stryd to be more responsive and switched back.

  • I use WKO and TP. I am going through the transition now. The power being uploaded to WKO and TP is from Garmin. It will take some 90 days to get a Garmin power duration curve established enough.

To get going I used 1.4 as a factor applied to the Stryd CP to establish my zones with the Garmin power. This works reasonably well. The Garmin default power zones percentages match Stryd's. I kept monitoring that being in Zone X with Garmin corresponded to being in Zone X with Stryd.

The watch gave me an estimated FTP after a few runs. I found it low. I didn't run the FTP test yet for other reasons.

I found that Garmin power is less stable and responsive than Stryd, but it useable.

I am keeping Stryd for distance and pace accuracy and to continue monitor the transition.

At this time here is where the transition is:

    - Stryd CP: 272W (from a 18-month old 5K PR)

    - Garmin FTP : 386 W (1.4x was 380W) - FTP auto detection gave me 376W on a Tempo run, so the jury is still out. The zones are working well though.

    - WKO 90day FTP: 354W, but my power duration curve is not well established, so I have some running to do.

    The dirty rat....

  • I did look at buying the new Stryd but the price is getting silly, besides which I am doing an ultra in June where there are many creek crossings so taking the pod off and on repeatedly is far from ideal!

  • Thanks for the input. I should have made the switch last year to get my new data established before my current intense training block. The recent hassles with native power/ stryd power channels and the poor resilience to water damage and losing my latest pod have forced my hand. I would expect Garmin to continue their work with power. Just done a run with antive power, will go and see what it looks like in TP! I will report back some figures here as things develop per chance others follow the same migration.

  • Damned thing has evaded two traps this week, they are harder to catch than people might think!

  • Lol honestly the price of everything is getting silly. And since we’re in the Garmin Fenix 7 sub forum I’ll go ahead and assume you paid the premium price for that Garmin Fenix 7. These companies keep jacking up the prices because they know consumers will keep buying their products because there’s nothing better at the moment.

  • I paid top price for the Fenix 7X when it came out having had a zillion miles from my Fenix 3 which is now being used by my son. Apart from charging my watch never leaves my wrist and is unlikely to be lost or damaged. The footpod has cost me dearly over the years, the fact it's not very waterproof is just crazy.. I lost two to water damage, one as I crossed a river (my fault as I never realised it was not properly water proof) another out in a heavy storm. I swim with my Fenix so know for sure it won't die due to water damage. Another gripe about Stryd, it is useless on steep mountainous terrain, it remains to be seen how Garmin native power shapes up in this respect, it surely can't be worse than Stryd!?

  • May I suggest baiting the trap with a Stryd?  It seems to have a taste for consumer electronics....
