What does Fenix 8 / Tactix 8 Need To Have To Make You Upgrade?

all the 965 talk got me thinking about the future of fenix/tactix and what it would take to get me to upgrade. garmin has never disappointed me before and i don't expect them to in the future, but what to expect? for me it would be a pretty short list. i just need a new sensor. if there's not a new optical sensor with improved accuracy, i see no reason to upgrade as that is easily the most important aspect of the watch. ecg would be nice, i'd prefer to NOT have amoled (although battery with mips is nowhere near what garmin promises) and i don't really need wireless charging either (and it's WILDLY inefficient). i'd love to see better solar charging (better efficiency from the panels) or maybe something radical like flexible panels on the watch band. for tactix i'd like to see something over the top like emp-resistance. in the end though it would come down to elevate 5...

  • Well you said you wanted more screen space so you’ll want that from the Tactix as well.

  • I also said a smaller bezel - so the overall 47mm diameter but with a larger screen diameter and narrower bezel.

Like I said in my original post I’m not asking for much- longer battery life on the AoD, larger screen size (achieved through a smaller bezel), narrower case, and the branding as Fenix. Really happy with my 7x pro and personally don’t need or want lte etc.

  • Yes you want a smaller bezel but still want tactix features and numbering at a cheaper price with AMOLED. I get it. A smaller face but more screen. A smaller case but more battery life.

  • You’re almost there - I don’t need applied ballastics. And I wouldn’t describe a larger screen as a smaller face, that makes no sense.

  • Applied ballistics doesn’t come with the tactix by default. You pay extra. But price point wise without the AP you want the features of the more expensive watch but cheaper.

You are moving from a 51 to 47 but you asked for a larger screen on the smaller face of the 51 compared to the 47 you are moving to

  • I don't get your point here. You basically want an epix, but with the Fenix branding? ...why? I can just ask for NOT going that way. I love the MIP for several reasons, so I'd love Garmin to stick with & optimize on the MIP technology. The epix is basically a copy of the Fenix, just with Amoled. So I guess and hope that that's the way. The Fenix/Epix double path with MIP/Amoled.

  • I suspect the Fenix switching to amoled is inevitable; I’m sure dcrainmaker has predicted it and given the Tactix has gone that way…

The question at the top of the post is what would make you upgrade to the 8. Well if the 8 is still mips then I won’t upgrade, I normally skip a generation anyway. But if the 8 is amoled with further improvements to the screen and battery then I’d be tempted. I do like the mips, hence I have a Fenix rather than Epix, but I suspect we won’t be seeing mips for too much longer. Garmin have done some great things with the amoled display, battery life is far superior to the Apple Watch, so I just hope that trajectory continues.

As for other features… perhaps some further sensors - blood glucose would be awesome but I’m not sure how realistic, and personally I would take improved screen and battery over that.

Hopefully that explains my thoughts a little clearer, and try not to worry if not! Have a good new year all Tada

  • I would love to see some Google Fit like auto recording for "indoor Walking" passive in the background (counting towards badges). And the auto detect and record feature for bike rides. Maybe even in cooperation with the mobile phone (phone in the pocket moving up and down, hand stays fixed, easy must be a bike ride).

  • What do you mean here? Steps are automatically tracked in the background and count for badges already. Or do you mean have the steps translated to distance (m/km) and counted for walking badges as well?

  • If there'll be a switch the name should continue with Epix, too. Fenix won't be a Fenix with an AMOLED display.
