Epix -> Fenix

A year into the Fenix/Epix release I'm curious if a lot of people here started with an Epix but then ended up switching to the Fenix. The Epix screen is really nice, and clearly what some people want, but I've found myself annoyed at how bright it is when I'm lying in bed trying to sleep in or even going to bed earlier than my Garmin set sleep times. Also, when I'm doing yard work and try to just glance at it, that's the worst possible situation for the Epix (when I don't actually raise my arm to activate the 'bright' screen).

I currently have both, and have went back and forth between them, but there are fewer and fewer times when I'm choosing the Epix now.

  • annoyed at how bright it is

Assume you've lowered the brightness for "General Use" and "During Sleep." And turned off wrist gesture. My display remains off unless I press a button or touch the screen.

  • Yes, brightness is down, and it's customized for General Use and During Sleep. When I'm within the 'sleep' window that I've defined in the Connect app it's fine, when it's an issue is, for example, on a Saturday if I'm sleeping in. I haven't adjusted the schedule to be different on weekends because it's not something that's normal. Also, if my bedtime is set for 11pm, but i go to bed at 10:45 it's still at normal brightness.

I know these are little nitpicky things, but also not an issue on the F7X.

  • I have only owned the Fenix, and while there are times I've lusted for the amoled display (especially when I'm messing around with satellite imagery on the maps), I couldn't see myself ever deciding to give up everything the transflective screen offers, like being able to use the screen without any backlight, having all my on-screen data always displayed all the time, and having a battery that lasts for an entire backpacking trip without dying.

  • Hi.
I agree with you. I have always AOD on and set the watch to the lowest brightness but at evenings it is just too bright.  It is like have a torchlight on your arm. I wish they kept the possibility to lower one more step like it was when it was released.
I’m like you and are use it less and less. Using the Fenix instead.

  • Bought an Epix but then bought a Tactix as just prefer the MIP AOD. I found gesture support on the Epix poor especially during activities and as you say, didn't like the OLED screen lighting up a dark room. Epix has now been sold on eBay.

  • Yeah, same here. I despise amoled for a watch. I'm like a beacon at night, and sometimes it is not bright enough in daylight. Factor in battery life in always on mode, and the Fenix is a clear winner for me.

  • if my bedtime is set for 11pm, but i go to bed at 10:45 it's still at normal brightness.

Then the General Use settings should apply. I've never experienced this as I always have gestures turned off in all cases except during an activity.  I literally have to be touching the watch for the display to turn on, otherwise it is completely black.

  • Interesting topic Slight smile

I have had a 7x for a while and it is rather an outdoor watch which shows its advantage during the summer season, when hiking/running/walking/cycling.

But as I have been training mostly indoors during winter evenings and my eyesight is no longer what is used to be, I have been missing a bright AMOLED. I have used gesture triggered backlight during treadmill runs, but it is not the same. That is why I am saving cash for an Epix - for me it will be like summer watch 7x, winter watch Epix Slight smile. Perhaps eventually I will settle to only one of them, can't tell now.

  • my eyesight is no longer what is used to be

Same here. I don't think I could go back to non-AMOLED after using the Epix. I get great battery life and I really have no need for a watch that will survive a multi-day event. Everyone has their use-case, so totally understand why some would prefer the Fenix 7.

  • Just had the same dilemma, went Enduro 2.

1.4 mips screen more readable more of the time then 1.3 AMOLED, without needing glasses.

However if there were an Enduro 3 with the 965 1.4 AMOLED, that would be perfect.

It's got the battery to last 10-14 days if it did over an Epix giving GPS that'll a long weekend and that Torch.

That said understand your concerns re build, the Enduro 2 buttons are not as good as my 5 year old F5x.

.....though their Customer Services have always been great as went through several Quatix, F2, F3, original Epix's (square) before  F5x which has been awesome.

Be interesting to see how the Enduro 2 fairs and owners reviews on the 965 Forerunner with the new 1.4 gen 2 AMOLED screen.

But for now wouldn't swap the Enduro 2, it's leagues ahead of the F5x screen and bigger than AMOLED
