Any plans to include hiking activities towards total distance?

It continues to baffle and annoy me that Hiking is still not counted towards total distance. It seems bit pointless to have an activity but not get a ton of data for. I've been recording my hikes as walks for years since Fenix 5, but wondering if there is any sensible reason why Garmin don't include this?

Searched through forums and have seen similar complaints but not really any reason.

On a similar note - is trail running included towards total distance and VO2 max, or do you need to keep selecting running?

  • Regarding VO2Max, a while ago the option to calculate this with a Trail Run activity was added. Can’t remember the default but it can be toggled within the Trail Run settings. It is supposed to compensate for some of the additional challenges of a trail but my experience ( and some others) is that it only really works on relatively tame trails.  Any really challenging stuff, including mud, sand, snow, etc or very hilly technical stuff will still drop your VO2Max.  I don’t see this as a surprise - how does the watch/algorithm know that you have 5lbs of mud stuck to your shoes or are wearing snowshoes in deep snow and so forth. I keep this toggled off for trail running - although I also don’t track the value very seriously anyway.
