Best outdoor running settings for fēnix 7

What are the best running settings for outdoor running (standard running, no trail or climbing)?

Does it make sense to activate the 3D speed options and ClimbPro? Is there a big difference or would you even notice a difference in the measurement?

Does the new multiband GPS feature make sense on standard trails where you have good GPS coverage? E.g. when doing a 5-15 km run through the forest. Or does it just drain the battery?

What's your configuration? Just wondering, on my previous watch FR 945 I didn't really change the default settings.

  • 3D speed and 3D distance wouldn't make any noticeable difference unless substantial elevation changes are involved. "Substantial" meaning at least 10% average slope or e.g. gaining or losing at least 100 meters per km.

ClimbPro only works when following a course. If you follow courses on hilly terrain than ClimbPro could be helpful. ClimbPro has no impact on accuracy.

I use multiband GPS always when train running. I have it disabled for road running. In my opinion, it would help to have a more accurate and stable pace when running through a forest.

  • Pretty much the same comments as silentvoyager.  3D options provide little value except more extreme situations. I just keep multiband on all the time as I don’t really need to stretch battery life to an extreme as I tend to charge on a somewhat regular basis anyway (including keeping a cable in the car).  I agree that it is likely overkill in good conditions on a road but you never know (auto would be a middle option). Obviously if I was doing an ultra I might set things differently just as some will have a need/desire for 3D and/or climb pro.

  • Thanks for the response.

I did a test with multiband GPS on my standard 5k route today and don't see any difference at all, so I guess I'll just set it to auto. I would probably use multiband when taking part in a race or when I know in advance that the GPS conditions will be poor.
