Antarctica maps

I noticed that there is a Topo Light - Antarctica map that is available on the European Garmin.com. It will not let me purchase (I am located in the US). This product is not listed on the US Garmin.com. Is there a way to get Antarctica Topo maps for the Fenix/Epix watches? Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Garmin Topo maps are based on OSM data. I can't help with Topo maps but there are other reputable providers that offer maps based on up-to-date OSM data which also work on Fenix 7. My favourite is openmtbmap.org. OpenMTBmap provides an antartica map for free. I just installed the antarctica map on my PC, created an *.img file optimized for viewing on fenix devices and copied the file to my Fenix 7 (about 29MB) and it works just fine.

  • BTW - how did you create own *.img file? Did you use any dedicated soft?

  • When you install a map provided by OpenMTBmap.org and you are not a premium member,  you need to execute a program provided as part of the installation to create the *.img for Garmin devices. During this process you are asked for which type of device you want to use the *.img file and the map will be optimized for display on this type of device (criteria: DPI, contrast, colours, etc). If you are interested in this topic you find a lot of information at OpenMTBmap.org for a deep dive. BTW: Premium members can easily download img files without going thru these steps.

  • The Premium member process on openmtbmap.org is very slick and not at all expensive (20 Euros for a year) considering that you can now get maps for the whole world. I'm off to Antarctica & Patagonia in a few days and confirm that the maps and contours for these areas are now on my Fenix 6 Pro and look great. Highly recommended! BTW, I'm not at all affiliated with the site but am always happy to support people that offer services like this.
