How does Garmin calculate TSS in swimming?

Hello,

Do you know how Garmin counts TSS in swimming?
Does it use my swimming threshold and HR?

If so is it important to have the HR zone set on the watch or not really?

I am asking because I'm not sure how to set my HR zones for swimming and I guess that when they are set incorrectly ALL the data get scred, doesn't it?

What do you think?

  • Enable in watfch separate HR zones for swimming and let measure it during swimming.
From my experience, HR rate measured by watch and external sensor varies a lot, I would recomend buy external one, like HRM-Swim or HRM-Pro.

  • I have separate HR zones for swimming but the problem is that I don't know what the correct % for each zone should be.In other words how to set the zones. I guess it's not the same as for runnig or cycling.

I read somewhere that critical swimming speed and duration of training can be taken into account while measuring TSS but I don't know if garmin uses it or not Slight smile

  • I don't know what the correct % for each zone should be

Don't over think it. Just use the same percentages for swimming. The main difference will likely be that the zones are tighter unless you are a good swimmer and can really drive your heart rate up. I definitely a very average swimmer and can only get my swimming max heart rate to within around 30beats of my running or cycling. The end result is that I have a smaller range and lower targets.

There are various methodologies to working out training zones for swimming depending on the age of the coach and how receptive they are to change! Most swimming coaches will work off pace when CSS is an important metric. Newer coaches may well use heart rate as long as they can be sure of getting accurate data. And that will generally only come from a strap although I do find the newest generation of WHR is very close to the readings from my strap.

And to answer the OP I do not know how or even if Garmin calculates a swimming TSS.

  • Don't over think it. Just use the same percentages for swimming.

You mean the same zones, % as for running?
I am not sure if that is correct...

I do not know how or even if Garmin calculates a swimming TSS

They definetely measure that - you can see it in your statistics after a workout.
