VO2 Max increasing, but training status says "No Trend" and stuck in Recovery (since 10.44 update, on F7xss)

Prior to updating to 10.44, my VO2 Max showed the trend as "Increasing", and my training status was Productive. Following the update, the VO2 Max now says "No Trend" even though it I have gone on multiple runs (since the update) and it is clearly still increasing via the graph.

Acute load dipped slightly below optimal for 2 days following the update, but has since been in the Optimal range. Despite all of this, the status seems to be stuck in Recovery.

Adding to this (but didn't take a pic at the time), I went for a 4 hour hike yesterday with 4000 ft vertical gain and HR in Z3+ for the way up. Upon completion, it showed the Training Status as Recovery, even though the activity was a 3.5 on the aerobic side (maybe this is a different thing, but I thought it updated Training Status upon workout completion).

  • I had tough running hilly race 55 minutes with GPS (Galileo+Glonass), avg heart rate 191 bpm
After the race it was 198 bpm and after Sunday, when I did light cycling, it dropped to 194 bpm, which is exactly, what I see that HR max value

Something is not right here. I would be surprised if you were able to bike with an average HR 98% of HR Max for 55mn. It could be that your peak HR during that race ended up very close to your HR Max, but not the average.

The HR Max to use in the heart rate zone is not the peak HR recorded in the past. Only specific, very hard workouts can get you to a few bpm below your HR Max. Typically running is better to test your HR Max., but you might get very close if you do steep climbs repeats at maximal effort for 2 to 4mn. The 5th or 6th interval should get you very close... The pb with the test is that the muscles sometime give up before the HR has the chance to getting to max, because of the anaerobic nature of these efforts. If you look for HR Max tests, you should find some options, aside from a Lab test. Easier to do if you have an indoor cycle, to execute ramp tests in that vein.

We are discussing HR Max because it is a key value for the VO2 max model. That said, since your TE looked elevated for a 55mn race, I wouldn't be surprised if your HR Max is set too low and that would prevent the VO2 Max to be calculated... Not sure...

Another key value is your rest HR. This is given by the watch during sleep typically.

  • Just important note - that tough race on Saturday was running event, forgot to mention that. I did cycling on Sunday, I usually do it after hard running.

Well, it is true, that I noticed, the watch started to inform me about adjustment of my HR max more often than in the past and truly after workouts, when I would really not expect it.
The question is, what I can do to fix it back. I have tried both ways for reset, connecting to PC via Garmin Express etc. I use also Edge540, physio true up enabled on both of them, as as I said, I have not changed any settings and it worked for long time without any problem. Most probably, I will need to do factory reset on the watch :/

  • Under user profile > heart rate and power zones > auto-detection, disable HR Max detection. Enter the most accurate HR Max value manually in the heart rate zones section, regardless of whether you are using % HR Max for zones or not.

Try a soft reset before you try a factory reset. Press the light button and don't let it go until the watch shuts down (it will show an emergency confirmation, just continue pressing the button).

Do a backup before restoring to factory settings. I did a factory reset in August and that fixed some battery drain for me, so you might get some unexpected benefits.

  • Thanks, guys for all of your inputs. Surprisingly by this morning, VO2max trend is back, hard to say why...
Most probably I will do the factory reset anyway as it has been quite long time since the purchase and first set up.
