10.44 Update did a factory reset

This is round 2.  10.43 did the same thing.  On restart it got stuck on "Reset default settings" for ages.  After considerable time pressing NO, it finally restarted and loaded the software, but it deleted ALL of my sensors (I have three bikes with Garmin pedals, speed sensors, cadence sensors, Di2, heart rate straps - everything GONE).  I spent two hours last time re-entering all the sensors, and just now with 10.44, all the sensors are gone again.  Garmin Connect welcomed me to my "NEW" fenix 7, and the only thing that remained was my custom face.  Everything else is completely zeroed out.

Is this what I should expect from the fenix 7?  My fenix 5 never gave me any issues like this, and I thought the 7 would be an upgrade.  FWIW, the device is very close to one year old now.

  • On the other hand, I did the update yesterday; the only input from me was to accept install now. Everything is still fine for me.

  • well idk how it would take someone 2 hours to pair a few sensors. 10-15 minutes maybe but 2 hours?

that aside, i haven't had this happen and i would be pretty pissed if it did happen. do you mess with the watch by chance? as in connect it to your pc and go around deleting files? i've done this a bunch of times and garmin doesn't let you delete anything that causes real harm, but maybe you're more advanced than i am and got around those failsafes for some reason. that's the only thing i could think of. either that or maybe you tried installing the update and nearly depleted battery and it died midway through the update and had to rewrite the OS? idk this is a weird one...

  • Bike 1 - Vector 3, speed, Shimano FC-R9100P, Di2; bike 2 speed & cadence; bike 3 speed and cadence; stationary bike Vector 3, 3 HRMs.  And the process is interrupted by unexpected returns to the home screen without even touching a button requiring starting the process all over again from zero.

No, no file(s) deleted.  No direct access except through Garmin Connect on the PC.  All sensors are still connected with the fenix 5.  What's worse?  I can't directly access the screens necessary to add sensors except through the buttons on the device.  I wouldn't care nearly as much if I could clone the sensors using Garmin Connect or a PC driven method, but that's not possible.

My hope is, the device is defective and will be replaced by Garmin so I only have to register these sensors one more time.  If not, it's time to entertain other options outside of Garmin.

Battery was at 92% when the update started.

  • Sounds like you have a problem watch rather than there being a problem with the watch generically.

  • I made my case to Garmin support.  They are replacing my watch under warranty.  Fingers crossed for a good outcome.
