Malfunctioning touch during activity

Hi all,

Today think I encountered a bug:

  • Touch settings System: General Use-On; During Activity-On; During Sleep; Off
  • Touch settings for all my activities: System
  • During an activity, I cannot swipe between the data screens. When long tapping the screen, I do get the option to change the data field, and touch works properly. When I to menu (hold light button), touch works perfectly fine as well. When returning to the activity, I still can's swipe between screens.

I made this video. Note that I first changed the activity touch setting from System to On, but that didn't help.

I didn't have this issue before the 10.43 update, but I don't recall whether I did an activity already after the 10.43.

Anyone else with this issue?

A soft restart solved the issue, so I guess it's a but. @Garmin, please let me know if you need any extra info on this one for fault-finding (in case this one goes on the list for de-bugging).

Additionally, I'm not sure whether this is a bug:

  • Activity started (touch works again, after restart)
  • Navigation started, by navigating to a point on the map
  • Touch works to swipe through screens
  • When I go to Menu>Turn by Turn, I can't swipe up/down to go to the next navigational instruction. When I use the up/down buttons, it works perfect. Also tapping the small arrows on top/bottom of the screen doesn't work. Swiping left to right to  go back to the menu works.

Is this normal?

Kind regards,

Ruud

  • There is odd stuff happening. I can scroll pages and tap datafields.

On a 8 fields page I have a timer and distance field next to each other. 4th row, left side "timer", right side "distance".

If I tap and hold "distance" it opens up "timer fields" if I hit it again text turns into "timer" and the "distance" field turns into a "timer" field. Another tap, exits the menu and I now have 2 timer fields next to each other.

Remains that way even after scrolling pages or closing and reopening the activity.

Now I I tap the real "timer" field left of the the new one (previously distance), menu "timer fields" shows again and at the same time the field to right of it turns back into the "distance field" (as it was originally setup to). Tapping out it's how it should be again. Left "timer", right "distance".

Feature itself is interesting (if it would work reliable) but I would turn it off because I'm afraid of how a water droplet could completely mess-up my layout.

I didn't even go bug hunting, just wanted to try this "long tap on data fields" thing and the first time I tried, on some random datafield, it did something unexpected.

This makes the need for a third non intrusive touch option (not changing settings by touch) between on or off even more important.

  • My issue was more with the fact that I couldn’t swipe between screens anymore during activities. I see you use the left two buttons for that, but can you also switch screens witch touch?

  • I know but since you described a function that I didn't know of I thought I try and add that it behaved strangely here anyway.

I can switch screens with touch if it's on and if it's off I also couldn't edit datafields. So I could not reproduce your issue.

Maybe it's an issue with a specific activity type?

  • I have a same issue with my Epix - I mentioned it before in the relevant forum but got no reply: https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/epix-2/315404/all-the-data-fields-changed-randomly-when-using-touch-to-edit. The long tap to change is completely borked - to the point of being dangerous to use. I first noticed when my sleeve messed up all the fields on my screen.

But the touch is really useful for the map. Luckily, you can have hotkey to turn touch on and off (I think it defaults to start + up from factory), so you can enable it for the map browsing, and then turn it of again for safety reasons. This might be relevant for the original poster - they could try turning touch off and on again this way to see if it changes anything. It's weird that once you use it, it gets remember on the activity, so if you have touch enabled for some activity and then use hotkey/controls menu to disable it during activity, it will be disabled next time you start the activity.

  • (I think it defaults to start + up from factory)

Start + Down - (top right + bottom left) by default to enable/disable Touch

  • What's your thread? Lets connect those, cause it's also not really on topic here that I posted a different issue.

  • I've noticed touch screen bugs too...

Music native app won't scroll songs if you have over 450... It just judders and won't move away from the first song on the list, buttons work perfectly.

Also the reference point app won't scroll( using touchscreen) saved locations if over 450,and some saved location distances are 1000s of miles out, and blank saved location screens, touchscreen judders and won't move away first saved location, buttons work perfectly to scroll with ....I have reported them both, and a ticket created, Garmin seem to have fixed the distance issue with over 450 saved locations, working now on my 7x and my partners 6s that had the same saved locations issue. (over 450)

  • I had this exact same issue although the drop of water was on the inside of my raincoat and totally screwed up my layout.  My suggestion to Garmin was to have a touchscreen for maps option, which I thought was an actual option before I bought my F7.

  • Yeah, touch screen for maps would be useful. Maybe for swiping between screens too (which is original topic of this thread) - just optionally disable any modifications via touch only interface.

But the other point is, usually drop of water should only screw one field. The problem is that the whole editing is broken, so editing single field often breaks all the others on the page.

  • yea, for me too is not working swipe between data screen on fenix7 10.43, even tho i forced in the menu to set touch ON
