Fenix 7X GPS accuracy

Hi forum users,

As a keen club runner for the past 5 years I’ve had my fair share of Fenix watches. The 5 was pretty good, the 6X not so. GPS accuracy of the 6X is poor under any form of tree canopied trail route (both standard and sapphire) but the wife has the 6S which is definitely more accurate than the 6X. I’ve even recorded 9.5 mi on a well known 10 mi trail route. Question is: what are the reports like on the 7 series?

I’ve complained to Garmin and actually think there is a problem with where the GPS receiver is on the X. Hoping the 7 is better.

  • Hoping the 7 is better.

I can only speak for myself. The track on the 7 series is much better. The track length is also good. Recorded half marathon a week ago. The watch has recorded 21.2 km. The activity was stopped only a few meters after the finish. So absolutely nothing to complain about.

  • From the experience from both 7x and now Tactix 7AB(have had all the X’s before), absolutely no complains, great tracks with no to barely any hiccups(and I live in NYC).

  • My 7X is the most accurate GPS watch I've ever had. I've had 6 other watches before it. It is even better than Suunto Ambit 3 Peak with its massive GPS antenna, which I thought was unbeatable. It is amazing how it gets every single switchback right when running on twisty trails.

  • The 6s is totally shite. Think of up to 80m short per 1km on mostly good conditions with here and there a bigger tree compared to measured race tracks
The 7s is so much better for me. Got it after I moved. Running conditions in this current town are worse, some narrower roads with 4-5 story townhouses. I still see a deviation of about 40m on days where the satellite configuration is not optimal, but usually it's a more like 20-30m. No idea why the watches always come in short relatively to measured distances though.

I got the 6s out recently and updated the firmware for comparison. It wasn't as far off as it used to be (still substantial difference), but the pace graph still looks totally *** with sudden drops in pace and then a moment where it overshoots and picks up again. Not a good watch.

  • Here a comparison I did in Februrary. 7X left wrist, 6X right wrist. The 7X is much more precise

  • I usually run around a jogging track surrounded by tall buildings. With my previous Coros (no multi-band satellite function), I literally went places. After 10 laps, there would be a lap or two that measured much longer distance(s) because I would "fly" to nearby buildings and back.

With my 7X, the multi-band or auto-satellite really gives so good results that I no longer have to calculate my total distance based on how many laps I run.

  • I had the 6s for mountainbiking. Mostly in forests. It was very bad. Not only tracking, but also distance was very bad. I upgraded to the 7s. Tracking is very good. Distance still wasnt very precise. I bought the garmin bike speed sensor. Together with the 7s it solved all my problems. Tracking is precise and distance is precise.

  • Hmmm. I have Garmin S7x  SS and Suunto A3 Peak and my old Suunto is still a GPS master - for example almost all time shows me which pavement I was running and his traces almost never  touch roads... A3 Peak has realy  awesome GPS tracking.

F7x is generally ok but  GPS accuracy is far away from A3. IMHO, in my watches.

  • My 7x is the most accurate I have ever tried .. Go for a 7 sapphire or 7x since these have multi-band... I will never go back
