Initiating a text message without a notification??

Hi

Is there a way to initiate a text message from the watch without having a notification to respond to?

And without using emergency alert option?

I have texted from my Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar a couple times just to try it out when I initially received the watch, but I had no idea how to get to that interface recently when i needed it, then it occurred to me that I probably had to receive a text from the person to be able to respond to it.... like without an active notification it seemed like I was maybe stuck?

It would be really awesome to be able to set up a few key contacts for sub-emergency texts, and be able to choose who it sends to, not just sending to all contacts when unnecessary. (The emergency option sends to multi-contacts listed and would be alarming and inappropriate if received for a non-emergency) ...even just simple phrases like "on my way" or "please come to my location (add coordinates)" and set up a couple custom phrases.

Or is there a Connect IQ app that makes this possible in a rudimentary way? (I wouldn't be opposed to trying to make one!...sounds kinda fun to do, actually!!)

This would have been useful a few times so far...

For example:

A few days ago I accidentally locked myself out of my shared office with my phone, car keys, badge ID still inside the office -- and being just outside the door, my phone was still connected to the watch, and my colleague had just left a few minutes prior and would have still been en route to the parking garage and could have come back to let me in without causing a big hassle for anyone.

I got this watch for all of the other things about it, didn't intend to ever text or such from it, and still don't intend to do that on any regular basis, but would be great to be able to initiate text.

The person I wanted to text is actually set up to see me via ActiveTrack activity from this watch, so I was even trying to think about how to use that to communicate if i couldn't text... I actually haven't looked at it to see what they see, like if I labeled a point as something, do they see it?? I was considering labeling saved coordinates as "please come back to office, im locked out"...but they likely wouldn't have seen that in time though, since the ActiveTrack invite goes to their email, I think, not text.

  • After you gave an example, it makes sense but it's not easy to make user-friendly implementation. It's a small screen for typing name or phone number, then message... Of course, in similar situation like yours it might be worth it.

  • Yes it's possible with Android.... You need a store app... Its called "Garmin sms"....

One of the most underrated apps in the store...

It allows you to send predifined messages to your phone contacts.... as many predefined texts as you like... or want to create...all without being contacted first.

Eg... Lock your phone in the house?.... Your still connected and outside, so you just send a predifined text to your chosen contact... From your watch.

Or you can just simply send a predifined text to anyone you want... you simply write your texts in the playstore companion app...I think it's great, I use it daily, to say, I love you to a loved one, or I'm home in 5 mins etc etc...

    All the best Thumbsup

  • Thank you so much for this info!! I just downloaded it and tried it and it's exactly what I was looking for!!

  • Glad I could point you in the right direction...

I'm thinking about contacting the developer, and seeing if texts can be done on the watches keyboard on the fly too...

  • Someone correct me if I am wrong but, without the connection to a phone, this is all but impossible. The fenix line is not a connected device. You cannot pay for connectivity no matter how much you want it.

In the above scenario, OP was out of the office with no phone. I am going to make the assumption here and say the watch was also not connected to the phone since Bluetooth range is limited. No matter the app installed there is no way for the fenix to do anything besides sit there on his wrist looking dope and track his steps as he walked back and forth looking for a way in.

The ONLY saving grace would be if he managed to be close enough to have Bluetooth connectivity to the phone

  • He actually wrote it was still connected..everyone here is aware of the limitations.
