How often does the watch connect to WiFi on its own?

It does directly after an activity, that's documented and expected.

It does sometimes sync a 2nd time about an hour after an activity, that's odd.

This morning I just got the update notice and update for the beta release.

All of course without any BT connection with the phone.

So maybe it's the auto update version, I always thought it only checks on manual or activity sync. But maybe it has its own intervals to connect.

It would be good to have some clarity on this, and allow a bit more configuration. For example, after a run I do a few minutes of stretches outside and find it annoying that the attempted sync fails. Adding a delay would resolve this. I'd also like to be able to select what items could be updated overnight.

Automatic wifi sync after an activity is an option that can be turned off - I have it off. Automatic updates is also an option that can be turned off - again, I have it off.

With these two options turned off, as far as I can tell the watch never connects to Wifi on its own initiative - only if I trigger a wifi sync or a wifi update check.

The beta releases are sent to the watch from GCM or so I am lead to understand from the Beta forum announcements. This transfer should be Bluetooth.

"As a member of the Public Beta program, this update will be automatically delivered to your watch through GCM. Please note that GCM will check for an available update once every 24 hours, and after that it may take several hours for the update to finish transferring and be available on your watch to install."
