Spotify Doesn't Sync Local Files

Hi!

I've been trying to sync a Spotify playlist consisting of music I have uploaded from my local files. Here is what I do:

  1. In the desktop app:
    1. I enable local files from a specified folders (from Edit » Preferences).
    2. I open the list of local files (from Your Library » Local files).
    3. I select a number of files.
    4. I right-click on any of them and add them to a new playlist, e.g. "Running (mp3)".
    5. I keep the app open.
  2. In the Android app:
    1. I open the newly created playlist.
    2. I click the "Download" icon to make the playlist available offline.
    3. The application waits for the desktop app to upload the files (if I close the desktop app, the Android app stops downloading).
  3. In the fenix 7 app:
    1. I open the Spotify app.
    2. The "Library" screen appears.
    3. I select "Add music & podcasts".
    4. I select "Playlists".
    5. I find the newly created playlist "Running (mp3)" (it says it contains 12 tracks).
    6. I select the playlist.
    7. A "Searching for Wi-Fi network" screen appears for a few seconds.
    8. A "Syncing Spotify... 0%Complete" screen appears for a few seconds.
    9. The "Playlists" screen appears again in the same state as before.
    10. I go back to the "Library" screen.
    11. The newly created playlist is missing (in my case only "Add music & podcasts" and "View settings" items appear) in the selection,

On the other hand, if I do the same with a playlist with non-local files, it gets sync'd properly. I suppose, if a playlist contains both local and non-local files, only the non-local files would be sync'd.

I would expect the Spotify app for fenix 7 to behave the same as the Android app and download the files (especially when they're already uploaded to Spotify).

P.S. Yes, I know I can download my own mp3s and playlist directly on the watch but switching between music providers is not particularly nice, and it would be great if I could have a proper running playlist with both local and Spotify music.

P.P.S. I bet it's not the case with fenix 7 only but rather any watch.

  • You can only sync online music. Spotify does NOT upload music. Your own music is always local.

  • I'm afraid you're not correct - as I mentioned, I created a playlist with these mp3s in Spotify for Windows and made it available offline in Spotify app for Android. That's what I expect from Spotify for Garmin.

  • I'm afraid you don't understand.

The watch does not support local Spotify files.

The local music in your android was synced locally between your Windows and Android device. It was never uploaded to Spotify. It was a device to device sync.

Even if you expect it, it will not work with Garmin.

  • Okay, let's assume my mp3s didn't end up on Spotify (could be the case). What do you mean they were sync'd with my Android phone locally? Neither my phone, nor my watch was connected to the computer.

I guess you mean the Spotify app on my computer transfered the files to my phone over-the-air. I find no reason why this should work with the Android app but on on the Garmin app.

What do you mean by "Even if you expect it, it will not work with Garmin."? Of course I expect it to work the same way the Android (and presumably iOS) app works like.

  • They transferred from device to device over your wifi network.
And no, again, the app does not support this on the watch.
it’s a minimal function app on the watch. No additional features.

  • Again, I do realize the ConnectIQ app doesn't support this. And that's basically the point of my post. I'm not reporting a bug but a missing feature that the Android app obviously has.

Maybe there's a reason why it's not implemented in the ConnectIQ app, e.g. missing API for peer-to-peer connection to another device on the Wi-Fi network (although I'm not sure if that's how the Windows and Android apps communicate), or "Ooops! We forgot to implement that!", etc.

"It is what it is." or "Because of reasons.", on the other hand, would be legit reasons before a 5 yo kid in a kindergarten, but hardly on the market.

  • I know this is an old post, but when you want to play your locally stored songs, you'll need to load songs using the Garmin Express desktop app. Once you loaded songs to your watch, go to music player, then hold Up button, then select "Music Providers". and then select "My Music" instead of Spoiify.

It took me an hour to figure this out, so hopefully this will help someone.
