No one is harming you by giving people and option that can be switched off.
And it's better without. Been there with another brand and no, didn't work well at all. Move IQ is good enough to detect casual or unplanned walk or run. For serious workout, press a button and…
It wont, they decided to not do this (or even have it as an option) with the Fenix series on purpose. But you can contact them and tell them you would like it: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/idea
But…
Unlike your vivosmart (?) 4, most Garmin watches won't automatically create a timed activity when they detect you're running or walking. They do have the Move IQ feature which will create automatically create entries in your calendar, but not activities in the activity list.
So basically if you want to create a timed activity, you have to do it manually.
From the watch face:
- Press START
- Select an activity such as Run, Walk or Bike
- Wait for a GPS lock and press START
- Press START again when you're done and use the menu to save your activity
hope this feature will be in next update software

But it wont be coming fast if ever..

Agree, I just supported what you wrote about Garmin decision. It's very hard, maybe impossible, to implement it right.
If this function was there I would probably let it auto record my daily bike commute, resulting in better fitness stats for me. But I'm to lazy to start a boring standard bike route twice a day every workday manually. :D
On my way back I would even have a bad GPS signal in a building corner at my starting point, so I would have an annoying pause at the beginning, but until that auto detect would kick in I would be on an open road already. :D
I tried to use that with another vendor years ago. Even without bad GPS signal, watch was not detecting bike ride properly. Sometimes half way, sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes not at all. The most irritating part was that there was no option for manual start. Btw, such company doesn't exist anymore.
Garmin seems to do good as it always appears on my move IQ timeline..but that does not really count.

IMO it depends on what the default behavior is, since everyone who works in tech knows that 99.99999% of users will never change their settings.
