Training Load and Recovery Accuracy for 50 year olds.

51 year old user coming from a reasonable level of fitness using my Forerunner 935 to my new Fenix 7X SS using the same HRM-TRI strap.

I was expecting some differences. Fortunately, the VO2max seems to agree but I have seen a marked increase in Aerobic and Anaerobic training effects from 3.5 to 5.0 aerobic and 0.1 to 3.2 anaerobic. Same 10k run, same times, same average HR. The recovery is suggested 4 days! I know I'm old but really? I probably would agree more with what the older 935 that suggested 24 to 36h recovery depending on how hard I was going.

[edit] The energy kcals has increased from 800 kcal on the 835 to 1000 kcal on the Fenix 7X for same run, same pace, same average HR.

I would like to provide feedback and assist in the research of new recovery features if someone from Garmin can contact me. I am a fit 51 year old data nerd :>

  • I'm 51, too.  Coming from a 6X I've not seen this although I could imagine that the watch needs to build up a baseline first (TrueUp is something I'm not too convinced in). I can't remember the first weeks with the 7x in that regard to be honest.

As I'm suffering from LongCovid issues the watch even recognized the sudden performance drop (e.g. from 5:30/km easy pace to suddenly 6:45/km easy pace).  Usually the watch gives me a recovery of about 24h when I've done an easy 10k (VO2max=43 :-( )This matches my personal feeling for my body (I'm running since 1999).  Btw: I only use WHR and no strap because I run by Stryd-power.

Just an idea: the maxHR value is still correct?  If it's too low this could also cause your high training effects values. A 5.0 is all out. I doubt that you do that.

  • There have been numerous issues with the recent firmware updates on some of the watches impacting TE etc - look at the 955 forum as an example - and this could have an impact here as well.

  • The Fenix 7X is right on my HRmax. It has updated in my two runs so far but I am questioning perhaps the 935 had a too high HRmax. Is there an easy way to check Max HR? I thought syncing with Garmin connect would just update my profile details. My VO2 is 51 and I'm trying to run 4:30. 24h is about right for my recovery but realistically I am running 10k every other day. I might swap back to 5k every day.

  • Yes, you can check it on watch. (I've German UI, translation back to English might be wrong)

Keep middle left button  pressed until menu appears. Scroll until "user profile", select it.

Scroll to "HR and power..." , select it and then select "heartrate" in the next menu.

There you should see the HRmax that the watch is currently using.

  • Thanks for that. The 935 was set HRmax 200 and Fenix 7X is 182 after 2 average runs. The 200 was probably real as I do have a high HR but I have had the 935 for about 5 years so my HRmax should have dropped by 5 in that time. Settings > Physiological Metrics > Auto Detect. was on but guess it was not smart enough to change that value over years and it is probably what is causing the disparity. The LTHR was the same for both at 175 which is about right for me.

    [edit] the fine print.

NOTE: The device detects a maximum heart rate only when
your heart rate is higher than the value set in your user profile.
