Does anyone else think the worst thing about Garmin watches is the charger?

I have had 3 Garmin watches - and generally love them...

However, I think that the charger really needs to be dropped in place of wireless charging!...

On all 3 of the watches I have had I have struggled to find a good fit for the charger... I try to always double check it after plugging it in as the connection is absolutely horrid.  On several occasions I have taken my watch "off charge" to find it dead shortly after because it wasn't actually charging!

Also my dad has had a Garmin since the start of the year, he showers with it (fresh water, does not swim with it on), and some of the pins on his are starting to corrode (quite unacceptable for a watch you can apparently swim with)!

I loved my fenix 6 and when the 7 came out I really hesitated purchasing it because of the charger.

Please Garmin make the 8 have wireless charging.

Am I the only one who thinks hates this?

  • I, completely agree with your opinion, although as soon signed up, I received a reply from a wireless charging hater, if they are happy with their current charging feature, thy should not reply trying to discouraged others from suggesting improvements to their Garmin smart watches, all other smart watches like Samsung and Apple sold with wireless charging options, and contrary of some people are replying, all are provided with fast chargers, faster than the the regular charging cable, I do own a phone charger that charges my phone up to 3 time faster than a regular wired charger, thank you for your opinion and suggestions.

  • Then your wired charger is crap.

Nice on the phone, but in the watch we don't have that space to spare without sacrificing something for it.

  • I'm totally agree with you, I posted my opinion about the need for wireless charging for at least all Fenix solar, but I  received 2 reply messages from some people that are haters of the wireless chargers, one seems to be happy with his wired charging, but tryed, to discouraging other, and the other other on who said that wireless charging is too slow,  I do own a wireless charger and it charges my phone and other devices 2 or more time faster. But something I am sure that Garmin will add more wireless charging to its line of smart watches, and they already have 2 model that can be wirelessly charged, we will have an option, and the people that doesn't liked could still charge their watches using theirs wired charger.

  • It might come eventually but the big problem is inductive charging through a metal case. While people constantly refer to the new release Garmin watches with wireless charging - eg Vivomove Trend - they overlook the case construction particularly on the back that allows wireless charging - fibre reinforced polymer. AFAIK all the watches that currently offer wireless charging do not have metal cases on the back - please feel free to prove me wrong. It gets much more complicated with a watch with a full metal case on the back. While charging 'windows' can be made through metal by having a different material that permits inductive charging, the 'window' on the back of current metal-cased watches is otherwise occupied by OHR. The other thing to consider is charging time. An Apple Watch or Vivomove Trend have much smaller batteries than the Fenix range for instance so require less time to charge from low levels than would be expected for a Fenix watch or other watch with large battery capacity.

The technology is developing so only a fool would say never but how long it will take before inductive charging through a metal case will come and be efficient enough is anyone's guess. In the meantime, for those who have problems with the current charging connection perhaps push to revert back to clips (the Vivomove Trend also has a Clip for cable charging) or have Garmin introduce the magnet-based charging cable connection on the current range of Marq Gen 2 watches to all watches.

  • i don't hate wireless charging. i use it daily for my phone. as i said, it's wildly inefficient, much slower and WILL reduce your battery life, so there are trade offs that i'm personally not keen on making here. it's very convenient to just set the phone on the pad and let it charge (slowly) overnight, but for my active watch i'd rather it be on my wrist as much as possible, even if it's tracking sleep and hrv. you make all the suggestions you want and i'll keep telling you how bad they are lol

  • yes this is acceptable. the core body temp sensor has a similar magnetic charging solution and it works great, although the same caveat of never charge it when the contacts are wet still notably applies and doing so may short/burn/corrode the contacts even here

  • Despite all of its flaws the Matrix Powerwatch 2 has a metal back and wireless charging.. because it uses heat to charge it.. I actually charged it up once on a warm plate that I placed on a stove (at the lowest setting)!

.. I would miss the connection.. would lock us into Garmin connect for syncing (I have my own sync software I have written - but requires my watch plugged in).. would really like wireless and a better port.

Also those who say it would take a lot of space - if they did replace the current port with wireless charging.. the coil takes basically no space and would be less space than the existing space taken up by the port!

  • Good spot. There is little doubt the technology is developing but as noted, it's anybody's guess how long before it becomes practical.

  • Протрите контакты ластиком для карандаша. там возможно окислились они
