How to trigger Update of Speed Sensor 2 with Fenix 7

Hi,

I've got a Fenix 7 and a Speed Sensor 2. Now I know that a couple of days ago, I got notified that an update is available for the speed sensor, but it failed (and wasn't actually a good time to do the update anyways). So it's still at version 2.3 and I would like to update it to version 4.0.

But how can I trigger the update? I can't find an option for that. I can connect the sensor to the watch (shows status connected), can read the serial number, software version etc., but there is no option for an update? Does the watch have to be connected to the phone for that, or is just having WLAN activated (with an appropriate network) sufficient?

Via Connect, I can trigger the update, but the connection between Connect and the speed sensor is so unstable, that it is not possible to do a sync, let alone a firmware update. So I'm hoping for the more stable Ant+ connection...

Cheers

  • I managed to do it with Garmin Explore.

  • If you connect and sync with Garmin Express the update will be sent to your watch. You should be prompted to update the sensor next time you use the sensor with the watch. You can also do it manually by connecting the sensor to the watch then apply the update from Sensors and Accessories, where you will see an option to apply the update in the menu list of the connected sensor.

  • Ok thanks, I'll try with Express these days. I hoped that I can do it without, since the other updates work without Express and I want to kill my Windows installation.

The weird thing is though, that I already got the message to perform the sensor update once, but the update failed. So in principle, the update should've been downloaded to the watch already, I guess. However, I don't see an option to update the sensor from the Sensors & Accessories menu if I connect the sensor to the watch. So I guess the watch killed the update file(s) after the failed attempt?

  • For me, the update was triggered on my watch after recording a ride. During the update I kept spinning the wheel so the sensor wouldn't shut down.

  • When I got the message, it was also after recording a ride. So I kind of hoped for that, but I recorded a ride yesterday, and there was no update notification.

Generally speaking, (directly) after a ride, I usually got other things on my mind than performing a sensor update, so in my opinion that's not really a good option. There really should be an option "Check for updates" in the sensor menu and "Perform Update" in case one was found.

  • Thanks, I finally got it working (took me some time until I could finally fire up Express).

I had a bit of a problem with the second sensor (I have two of them), but after some trial and error I was able to apply the update to that one as well. I had to enter and exit the menu for the sensor about 10-15 times until the update option appeared and then I had to retry 3 times until the watch finally connected to the sensor for the update (even though it was connected just fine before).

I really wish Garmin would just provide a USB port on those sensors. :/
