You have to start it manually even to get the reading. Or am I missing something.

you're not missing anything. only at the end of an activity, only started manually, and when you see it that's it. it doesn't get saved or tracked anywhere. it's been this way forever and is utterly worthless

Yes, I confirm it does get saved to the FIT file (assuming you do not start saving the activity before it gets measured - the measurement takes 2 mins). And you can measure the Recovery HR anytime during the activity - it is enough to pause it, and select Recovery HR in the activity menu.
I use to do it regularly after most sprints, or after heavy hill runs - it is a much more valuable metrics, getting the RHR after maximal effort, than measuring it after the end of the activity, especially if you use to cool down before ending it.
